I have hardly used my Oregon 300 in the past 6 years.  Last fall started making experimental layers with the current data from USGS, Census and OSM.  I did many hundreds of uploads to the Or300 using sendmap2; some without a custom type file, others with.  The .img file(s) were deleted from the Or300 after every one or two file were uploaded.  Three days ago I stated to get a 'memory full' message almost every time the Or300 was connect to my computer USB port.  Initially a file sent using sendmap2 was OK; then after a few uploads the Or300 would not show the file on the map select menu (it would show with the proper upload/build time using edge).  The Or300 now goes into USB access mode about 6-7 seconds after the 'memory full' message appears whether 'OK' is pressed or not.

There are no waypoints, tracks nor geocashes on the Or300 nor on the microSD card.  The OR300 has the Garmin basemap and the MicroSD has my state map from a decade ago.
Free space on the OR300 is 900Mb of 1Gb and on the microSD is 3.7Gb of 4.0Gb.  Neither removing the microSD card nor using another changes anything, nor does trying two other USB cables.  The 'memory full' message also appears when in 'battery mode'.  Also tried another computer, transferring the sendmap2 gmapsupp.img file via edge to the microSD and transferring other .img files made years ago - none work.

Any suggestions?
   Wore out unit?
A corrupt file?  I have done a 'factory reinstall' twice.

GPSr Units / Nuvi - is Garmin for real?
September 07, 2015, 02:38:09 PM
Have a new auto and was looking for a navigation gpsr.  Garmin's website currently shows 67 Nuvi models available.
Do they really expect someone to comprehend all that to make a proper choice?
How many of those units are obsolete and will soon be dropped and no longer valid for lifetime upgrades of the maps?

Site Support / color in mapset descriptions
May 18, 2014, 11:47:10 AM
I was wanting to change the text in my state topo mapsets so users would be aware there is an issue with the 64 bit Windows environment and not just Windows 7.  When the few word change was saved the text was no black instead of the red it had been.  The software doc indicates there is an icon to click on for changing the color of text; however, I do not see it.
The Nebraska topo was the one I was testing.

Site Support / Christmas downloads
December 25, 2012, 03:28:18 PM
Oz,

Looks like you web host did not plan for over 1 million downloads.

It just went from over 999 thousand to over 1 thousand.

Thanks for the site and hosting our mapsets.

You and all others have a wonderful holiday season and new year.

Map Making Support / Limits on older GPSrs
March 31, 2012, 08:51:44 AM
I have placed about 1-1/2 Gb from a mapset on a 4Gb card (only data on the card).
I do not have a 2Gb card and my 76csx will not use the gmapsupp.img if I place it on a 4Gb card.
Do the older models have a 2Gb maximum card size, or is there some other reason the 4Gb card can not be read?

Site Support / Request Delete
February 23, 2012, 04:41:02 PM
OZ:

I sent you a PM on Feb 4, 2012 about deleting 2 of my mapsets and possible some others.
A few days later, I also used the 'your account/files:manage maps:request delete to request a delete on those two mapsets.
A few days ago I also mentioned this in one of the threads you were posting to.

So far I have not received a response to any of the above.  Have you seen any of the above?

Since I do not recall it ever being mentioned, what is your/gpsfiledepot policy/practice on deleting mapsets?

Map Making Support / TIGER 2011
December 13, 2011, 04:01:10 PM
Census TIGER 2011 files were released late yesterday afternoon.

Any thoughts on how often a mapset should be revised/updated?

That is another 'feature' (like 3D) that only Garmin knows how to do.

Site Support / Mapset uploads
May 15, 2011, 07:46:04 AM
I have been trying to upload revised windows and mac mapsets.
Worked as usual on the 10th.  Today in Manage Maps, upon clicking the 'Upload Windows File' or 'Upload Mac File', I am receiving "A problem with this webpage caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab' in a one line window at the bottom of the screen and 'We are unable to return to gpsfiledepot.com' etc.   in the main window.

FYI - Microsoft installed a new version of IE on Friday.  As uisual for them, it has so many bugs it is essentially usless.

Map Making Support / 2010 Census TIGER shape files
July 16, 2010, 06:07:46 AM
The 2010 TIGER shape files will be released by State from Dec, 2010 through Feb 2011.

This is a departure from the Fall/4th quarter releases of the past three years (2007 was delayed until March, 2008; 2008 in Dec 2008; and 2009 in Oct 2009).

From email to Census - 'Since we are in a Decennial Census year, the scheduled releases of the geographic files follow the scheduled releases of the demographic data.   The shapefiles will be released on a flow basis, coinciding with the release of the redistricting data beginning in December.'  In the past, about 5 States (in some random order) are in each weekly release over a 10 week period.

General Discussion / City Navigator & hydro
April 16, 2010, 12:43:04 PM
I am working on a contour overlay/transparent mapset for the US.
I have seen posts and looked at the CN maps on Garmin's website and agree that the hydro in Garmin's City Navigator is fairly general.
What are your thoughts on expanding the scope of the contour line mapset to include NHD hydro, physical feature GNIS points, etc.?

I have been doing some tests contouring of the world using the 90m SRTM data.

I expect the display scale for the detailed contours would be about .3 mi (.5 mi on the OR300) which is about 1:150,000 or 1:125,000.

1.   Would a good series of contour intervals in meters(depending on slope) be:
       50 - 25 - 12.5? - 6.25??
   or 40 - 20 - 10? - 5?
   or 30 - 15 -  7.5? (which is close to 100 - 50 - 25 feet)

2.   Should the contours not be 'touching' at the zoom level they first display at, or would zooming-in one level for 'clarity' be acceptable?

3.   Any value to including physical features like summits, etc - most of the coordinates in the NGA data base only record location to the nearest minute (6100 ft / 2000 m)?

Map Making Support / Contour line interval
August 20, 2009, 01:46:30 PM
What I am now trying to figure out is how exact the contour interval can be.  Will changing it for each 7 1/2 quad which is different (see my Colorado test of concept mapset) be too confusing for the average user?  In my local area, I find having a 10' next to 40' somewhat  'disturbing/???', and I have seen 5' next to 40'.  What to do with a dual contour interval on the source topo quadrangle - where the highly sloping area has the 'base' CI and the flat areas on the same quad are described with a supplemental CI.  There are also many quads in metric.  Perhaps I am too concered, as the vast majority of users could not tell much about landform detailed lrom the contour lines anyway.

Map Making Support / issues making a world map
August 13, 2009, 09:58:56 AM
1.  In compiling quads/tiles with cgpsmapper I get the 'W008 - element spans more than 10 degrees' warning.  At 10x10 I do not, but get the message when MapSetToolKit 1.62 is used to build the mapset for MapSource.  I have not noticed any difference, but is there any effect on the data if larger tiles are used?

2.  MapSetToolKit will not finish building if the mapset limits are -180 to 180 longitude.  If the west and east columns of quads/tiles are restricted to -179.9 and 179.9, it works properly; however, some land area in eastern Siberia will be missed.  Similiar situation in using 90 & -90 latitude.  Full 10x10 quads/tiles work with SendMap2 and the resulting gmapsupp.img file works OK on the GPSr.  Has anyone else encountered this?  Is there a way to go to -180/180 other than using 4 'quarter' mapsets?

Thanks

Map Making Support / Test of concept maps
April 21, 2009, 08:00:44 AM
I have uploaded two mapsets to test some concepts.

The Colorado mapset uses the same contour interval for each 7-1/2' quad area that was used on the USGS printed topo quad maps.  This method uses the source data to produce the maximum countour detail without creating lines not supported by the original data resolution.
Land ownership (Federal and Indian) are shown as polygons above the 800' zoom level and as a boundary line when zoomed to 800' and more detailed.  I and some others have found the colored polygon background makes the other map data to difficult to see.  This may or may not be an acceptable comprimise.

The Pennsylvania mapset only includes contour lines where the NED data (the elevation grid data used to construct the contour lines) was created using more current production methods.  The contours created from NED data created using the earlier methods seldom match those on the printed USGS topo quads.  Currently about 12% of the data in PA is of this earlier vintage.

Your comments on these concepts and/or some of the other items I have been including with my previous mapsets would be appreciated.

Is there a free (easy to use) text editor which will work on all files in a folder without manually opening each file individually?  I have 150 .mp files which need two items changed and the results from a google search are wasting time with version which do not actually do this.  Thanks.
