I have a very large Garmin map .img file (241,096 kb)
It is the GDMBR mountain bike route from Canada to New Mexico

When I try and load it into GPS Mapedit it opens a dialog box showing me all the contents of this .img container
There is about 50+ files in this container
See my screen shot

Doing several google searches, I did not find any solutions

How can I extract all these files into individual .img and TYP files?
Or extract the maps into .mp or .txt files that I can use in GPS mapedit

I have found quite a few trails are on OSMand that are not on other maps
https://osmand.net

Also, you can add new trails to OSM using the JOSM editor

I use a few of his converters and they are great

He is interested in adding this converter to his web site

Pretty straight forward if you just copy the source data in GPSMapEdit and then paste it into a converter window

Polyline-track data looks like this when it is converted to a .gpx track

I needed to convert a track/polyline to a .gpx the other day again.

I just turn on a detailed topo background on my gps when I need it
I don't like all the extra screen clutter when I am hiking trails

One thing I do often in GpsMapEdit is to open two copies of the program

I run dual 23 inch monitors
That makes it handy to have the two copies of GpsMapEdit running on separate screens

You can copy objects on one map and paste them onto another map

Very simple and easy

This was answered above but I thought it would be nice to see some screen shots
It was confusing to me the first time I was trying to figure out how to add .gpx data to one of my GpsMapEdit maps

To add .gpx data to an existing map
Open an existing map in GpsMapEdit and choose ADD from the file menu
The .gpx file data shows on your map as shown in my screen shots

Or just open the .gpx file in GpsMapEdit
Choose the file and it will show on your map
Right click on any item and choose what to do with it
Tracks get converted to polylines
Waypoint get converted to points

Choose the type of object from the dialog box that opens
Lines and points all have many types you can choose from

If you save your map in  GpsMapEdit, the .gpx file will be attached to the GpsMapEdit file
You can click on any of the .gpx objects in your map and it will delete all of them
Your converted objects will still be on your map

If you do not delete the .gpx file from you map, it will open every time you open your map
The file gets attached to your map data .txt or .mp file
You can open those files and delete the .gpx line manually

The site has many cool conversions

Everything ends up getting added to my custom maps in GPSmapedit
Then converted to a Gamin .img file using cGPSmapper

As far as OSM, I edit my own OSM data using JOSM
You can save that as a osm file

If you register with OSM, you are then allowed to edit OSM maps
There are 3 ways to edit the OSM map data

JOSM allows you to add .gpx track data to the main map layer and then upload it

I don't use it from the command line.
I use Sendmap20.exe which lets you load maps and .typ files in one easy session.

Change the name of the map in the Mapset box
Then Upload to my Garmin Oregon
Fast and easy

I do that with GPSMapEdit and cGPSmapper

Import/open all the .gpx files-data you want on your map into GPSMapEdit
Save it as a .txt file
I use a .bat file to run cGPSmapper to create a Garmin .img file

It creates a Garmin map .img file that you can then load into your Garmin
I use sendmap20.exe to load the map into my Garmin
I also use the same garmin .img file on my phone using OruxMaps.

All the data you entered in GPSMapEdit is now part of the Garmin map
It's not a track file or any other object, it's part of the map

You can go back and open the .txt file in GPSMapEdit and edit it or add more anytime you want and create the edited map again

For example in my screen shot below
This is me a small section of a map in GPSMapedit
And what you see on the screen is exactly what the map looks like in my Garmin Oregon and Oruxmaps on my phone

I wish there was some way to select a polyline or point and export just that item to a .gpx file

I know how to select by type and export to kml
That exports  every item you have checked on the whole map, which is a bunch of stuff

Then I have to go use a kml to .gpx converter program and pick out what I need

Anyone know of a way to get GpsMapEdit to export a .gpx file for just selected items?

Hi,
As was said above, I don't use mapsource, don't really need it.

All my custom maps come from usgs dem24k data and also Ozi-Exporer track and waypoint files.
cgpsmapper works just fine for creating those type of maps from raw data.

It is all ok now , see my post and screen shots right above this one.

Haaa... , nailed it

I changed some things in my cgpsmapper header file and now the topo lines are brown.
Although I don't quite understand which setting is responsible.
Maybe someone with a better understanding of it all can explain?

Hmmm, ok, but they are brown in my Map76cs and white in the Oregon using the same exact file
This is why I am scratching my head - see screen shot from Oregon

Yes, that's my thought also.
But, something must be different between Garmins, because the file works fine on one Garmin but not the Oregon.
I am thinking that it has to do with the Oregon charcter sets/bitmaps or something.

My custom maps all look different in the Oregon
The tracks, the lines, the water, etc all look slightly different.

Will not be able to mess with it again until tomorrow -thursday.
