Map Making Support / Re: Oregon State Group Project
February 07, 2009, 01:31:42 PM
mps4gps,

That did the trick.  Thanks for the help.

OZ,
This might be worth a rewrite on the Water section of the tutorial.  It is a lot more convenient than waiting for NHD to send a query.  I simply opened the NHDArea, NHDFlowline, and NHDWaterbody MDB seperately.  I then export each shapefile from GM10.  NHDArea and NHDWaterbody as Areas and NHDFlowline as lines.

I am looking specifically at NHDN1024.  I do not know where to upload it unless OZ will let us load it here.

I did notice that Global Mapper will open the flowline database.  I can then export a shapefile from that.  When I tried to open the area and waterbody, Global Mapper told me no data was available.

3. Hydrography (NHD) from ftp://nhdftp.usgs.gov/SubRegions/High/ as of 12/08/08

I see you gave the above link for getting NHD data.  I have been waiting for one little sub-basin for several weeks.  I have re-requested it several times.  I got tired of waiting, so I followed the above link to try to get it.  When I downloaded the zip file, it gave me an access database.  How did you use that to get the shapefiles you needed?

Map Making Support / Re: Topo Process Program (BETA!)

Nope,
I installed the vb6 thing and it worked.  I just used the gnis part and it was great.  I will try the rest of them once I download more data.

Map Making Support / Re: Water Data Errors
January 17, 2009, 11:21:35 AM
I don't think I can help you with this, but I have just finished an Illinois map and posted it to this site yesterday.  It contains topo, water, roads, federal lands, and state parks.  I am currently processing just topo and water data and will post that map when it completes.

For your problem, try drop table nhd_area.  I have had the problem before where if a table already existed, I couldn't add more to it.  Therefore, this might be an extension of that.  I would try again from scratch.

I tried to run the beta.  When I clicked on it, the GNIS box that asks for Internet appeared.  I clicked on it and got  Run-time error '339': Component 'MSINET.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.

Help?!

Map Making Support / gnis process

When I try to run gnis process, I click the All at once, and I get a Run Time Error '70' Permission denied.

Any thoughts?

Map Making Support / Re: Generalize in GPSMapEdit
January 13, 2009, 04:46:21 AM
I tried it with a smaller file.  What I found is that, for example, you have a line made up of three points, the two ends and one in the middle that is slightly out of line.  The generalize function will remove that middle point and make a straight line.  This is especially noticable on contour lines.  On the small files I tried, it looked like the error was ~ 5 feet.  This is not a big deal on contour lines, but I did notice it happened to some roads.

I have a feeling that cgpsmapper does the same thing when the generalize and intersection is selected for preprocessing.  However, if I went with no preprocessing to save the accuracy, not all of the interections on roads would meet.

Map Making Support / Re: Generalize in GPSMapEdit
January 08, 2009, 07:18:55 PM
Just tried it again.  10 million not 1 million.  My bad.  This is for a quad in southern Illinois.  The contours are set at 10, 50 and 100 ft.  Plus I have water data and road data.  The contours are extended up to levels 0, 1 and 2 respectively.  Maybe this is my mistake.  When I tried to run it in cgpsmapper, I got an error that said the RGN file was too large.

Map Making Support / Generalize in GPSMapEdit
January 08, 2009, 06:47:36 PM
I tried using the Generalize feature under the Tools menu on GPS MapEdit.  I noticed on one of my quads it removed like 1E6 points and halved the file size.  Extactly what is it doing and does it affect the accuracy of my maps.

Thanks,
Sam

Map Making Support / Export Shapefile from PostGIS
December 13, 2008, 06:26:43 PM
I have compiled all the NHD info into PostgreSQL.  When I try to export the data to a shapefile, it starts fine, but when it starts dumping, an error message comes up that says pgsql2shp.exe has stopped working.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit.  Any ideas?

Map Making Support / Installing PostgreSQL
December 10, 2008, 04:58:25 AM
I just got a new computer so I have to reinstall PostgreSQL.  I noticed the tutorial is different than the steps of the program.  Specifically, on the screen where you check Run as Service(?), there are lines for superuser name and password.  I did not see any mention of this in the tutorial.  Is there any chance of getting updated instructions for installing the service?

Second, I notice that the site that hosts PostgreSQL has an auto installer for the latest version.  It ends with -2 instead of -1.  Has anyone tried using it to install PostgreSQL, and how does it compare to the manual instructions in the tutorial?  Are there any changes that need to be made after it installs?

Thanks,
Tsnake

Map Making Support / error in water step
September 12, 2008, 04:29:06 PM
I type the command psql -d postgis -h localhost -U postgres -f nhd_area.sql  and I get a whole list of errors.  They read psql:nhd_area.sql:1749:  ERROR: current transaction is aborted, commands ignored until end of transaction block.  The 1749 starts at 1 and eventually I get an abort program screen.

Please help.
