Using The Maps/Garmin Software / Re: JNX
September 15, 2016, 04:31:55 PM
Hi, Boyd.
Just thought I'd drop you a line while still on holiday in the USA.
I did get a reply from Garmin about JNX files but the simple answer is only to have one of the TOPO's open at the same time.
Could I just say how much I appreciate the TOPO's I've downloaded from this site! They have been spot on.
Bye for now.

I've downloaded the Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah and Arizona Topo's from this site.
I had thought about getting the Garmin Birdseye, as there is a demo download I've got in Basecamp, but, as I'd only really want it for one small area, didn't think it was worth paying out for!
Does this help?

Using The Maps/Garmin Software / JNX
August 29, 2016, 11:07:22 AM
Hi, there.
Well I've managed to load a few TOPO maps to my Oregon 650, courtesy of help from Boyd and maps on GPS File Depot.
However, I've now got a message on my Garmin that says 'Too many JNX files. They will not all be displayed.' As explained before, I'm a complete novice with this GPS but would like help knowing a) does that mean the maps I have downloaded will not work when I go on my trip (flying on Thursday this week)
b) I downloaded everything to an SD card (16GB). Is that an issue?
c) I don't think I'm able to check if maps work while on this side of the pond, or am I mistaken?
Anybodies (quick) response would be greatly appreciated.
Rewgards,
John

Thanks, Boyd.
We'll try to enjoy ourselves!
While I'm writing, I found some DMS cordinates for some sites and put them into Google Earth. They showed the position of my area of interest miles away. Any ideas why?

John

Boyd, once again I am deeply indebted to you!
The links you sent are excellent and have really helped me.
The reason I was trying to get images with more detail is that my wife and I like to walk trails, as I told you before. Several years ago we got into Native American Rock Art, and ruins, which combines nicely with the walking. As a lot of these sites are really off road, at least we can get in part way by 4 X 4 and then walk the rest. However, some of the better sites are quite difficult to find unless you have exact details. Regrettably, a lot of the people who do know where the obscure sites are, keep them to themselves or within a select group. Being from Great Britain puts as at a bit of a disadvantage, unfortunately!
Sorry! Not having a moan. Really am obliged for your help.
Kind regards,
John

Thanks for this, Boyd.
You've highlighted another misconception that I had but can understand what you're saying.
It might be subjective but I wanted the maps for trail walking in areas of Utah and Wyoming. I suppose it depends on which maps give the best details - I know sat maps will show me exactly what's there - but from the point of view of selecting the trails I want.
It's a MINEFIELD!

Thanks for this, Boyd. I've an awful lot to learn about GPS in general and, to be honest, I manage to get out walking so little nowadays, plus my advancing years, that it's a struggle to take some of this in. However, you don't succeed if you don't try!
Can I ask a question? As I understand it, paying for BirdsEye subscription entitles me to download the maps to my PC; the maps being Worldwide. If I download maps to Basecamp can I then save the particular maps I require to individual micro SD cards? ie to separate UK from USA maps. From what you say, if I do that then I will always be able to access the maps directly from my GPS device. Is that correct?
Regards,
John

Sorry I missed your reply.
Got a bit of a bug last week and still shaking it off!
My wife's got quite an itinerary going. I know that we will be walking in Wyoming and Utah, plus a little bit in Nevada and Colorado (but that's mountain trails and she's got quite a few paper maps for there as we've been a time a two before)
It's mainly the first two.
I've been looking, today, at the Garmin BirdsEye maps and they certainly look alright but it's a shame the subscription only last a year.

John

Hi, there.
Read your post re maps etc.
My son bought me an Oregon 650 for a proposed trip to the USA my wife and I were undertaking in 2014. Unfortunately health problems prevented us going so it's only been used here in Great Britain. However, we are crossing the pond, God willing, in 6 weeks time and I want to use it then. However, I'm still trying to sort out some maps, for trail walking, before I go.
Can you tell me how you went on with your Oregon? Did it do all that it you expected from it? What sort of maps did you manage to find?
Sorry there's a lot of questions!
Kind regards,
John

General Discussion / Utah topo

Greetings from the other side of the pond!
I posted a topic in a similar vein just over two years ago regarding a proposed trip to the USA. Unfortunately, due to health problems, we had to cancel the trip that year and also the one we had planned for last year.
However, my wife and I do like to walk and, to make the walks a little more interesting, we now like to look for Native American art ie Pictograms and Petroglyphs. We plan to be based at Bluff for a few days and I'm trying to find out if the are any TOPO maps that cover around that area that are compatible with a Garmin 650, a lavish birthday gift from my son. Obviously it would need to be fairly detailed and, more importantly, downloadable!
Can anybody make any recommendations, please?
Kind regards,
John

Thanks for these suggested hikes, Seldom.
Not sure what my wife has got planned yet but will pass these on. However, I think she might have us going to slightly different areas, for our trip this year, than you have mentioned. I bow to her organisational skills in sorting out our hikes. She's never let us down yet!
Kind regards,
John

Many thanks, Seldom.
I really am quite a novice when it comes to using a GPS Tracker and the Garmin my son bought my wife and I seems to have far more features than I could ever hope to use. However, I'm going to look at the maps that have been suggested on the forum and see what suits me best.
I know that some of the places we have been to are easily accessible but it's some of the ones my wife has found, from various forums, showing the location of Native American Rock Art, that take a bit more finding out.
A couple of years ago we tried to find (unsuccessfully) the 'Great Crane' AKA 'Bird with Egg' in the Butler Wash area but the maps we had were a bit confusing hence our lack of success.
However, on a previous trip to that area we had found the 'Wolfman' panels.
We have done some of the usual 'touristy' bits ie Zion, Canyonlands etc and have enjoyed them but we do tend to stay out of the areas largely populated by tourists (no we aren't anti-social!) but we do like to get about on our own. (Possibly the reason I didn't get all the way to the top of Angels Landing; those German and French young people do so like to push their way about) We have done Observation Point a couple of times, though.
Ah, well. Enough of reminiscing.
Thanks again, to all the replies to my post.
Kind regards,
John

Much obliged for your prompt reply! I'll have a look at these tomorrow and see if I can make sense of them.
Incidentally, if the maps I end up downloading are overlays, where would I be able to get the map itself, please? Is this a Garmin one that needs to be downloaded first?
Kind regards,
John

Using The Maps/Garmin Software / Help with Maps!
March 11, 2015, 08:51:17 AM
Hi.
Well this might seem pretty stupid to some of you out there but I'll go ahead just the same.
My son very kindly bought me wife and I an Oregan 650 for Christmas. We live in England but do like to hike in the United States and, particularly, Utah where we seem to have joined the group of people who hunt for Native American art ie petroglyphs and pictograms (it gives a different emphasis to the hikes)
I'm totally new to GPS units and as this one is, to me, quite complicated am seeking advise on the best maps, and way of downloading them them, which will show the trails in the areas we will be going to on our trip to the USA later in the year.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated!
Kind regards,
John
PS I have downloaded some maps for the areas we do walk here in England so I do have a rudimentary knowledge. JP
