General Discussion / Re: accuracy of trip odometer
July 01, 2010, 07:31:53 AM
on my dakaota walking in hill/mountains that fluctuates between canopy and open sky, distance and time travelling data can fluctuate by as much as 50% compared to original track/route.  When on flat open ground, it is very accurate.

thx

General Discussion / Re: Garmin 24k Topo Map
June 23, 2010, 09:05:30 PM
i have southwest map of that includes rocky national park. We have mapped out lots of trails throughout the park. I find that the main problem has been that most of them are not labelled with the typical trail name but again for the most part the 24k southwest map has a lot of trails. I will have to see if your trails are listed.

General Discussion / Re: accuracy of trip odometer
June 23, 2010, 08:57:47 PM
wow, i thought i was just asking a dumb question. Now i see that this has been a complicated, confusing issue that has not been consistently resolved between units. Regarding speed issue, i will take the unit out on my ocean kayak where we travel at around 3mile/hours  and clear line of site and of course flat terrain. Curious if my known distance and stopped time are correct.

You would think that garmin is aware of this and would have a firmware update.

thx again for your thoughtful responses!

General Discussion / accuracy of trip odometer
June 22, 2010, 07:39:52 AM
Probably an obvious answer but...  I have a dakota 20 and hike around in the hill/mountains, etc. It works great for location, and mapping etc. However i notice that most of the time when i finish a hike the trip odometer for distance is usually a lot less than the actual route/track distance that i recorded. Is this due to elevation changes or periodically losing signal?

thx

I went back and set my time on both the camera and dakota to within 10-15secs of each other at most. Went out recorded track shot some images including one of time on GPSr. Selected track again in basecamp in library, went to edit-->geotag photos, and same problem. Just doesn't recognize the images as candidates for geotag. These are just jpgs, not raw files.

I will try geosetter BUT this should work and am very confused as to why it isn't. I am using latest version of basecamp. I can't imagine that there would be a file size problem with JPG images. All shot from 12mpix dslr camera.

any help further comments, suggestions appreciated!

thx, i will try that. How precisely do the gpsr and camera clocks need to be set? I had time zone the same and the actual time was probably within one minute of each other.

I will look into the program you mentioned.

Has anyone  on the forum actually used this particular basecamp function? Is there anything else that could be causing this problem?

thx

hi all
wanted to geotag some photos to put into lightroom
followed basecamp help menu
1. camera and computer time zone set
2. created track in field and took picts. Downloaded photos and saved track to basecamp/computer
3. selected track in basecamp library, then went to Edit-->geotag photo
4. selected folder of jpg images
5. hit preview and message came back that said "no images suitable for geotag" or something like that. (same applied to raw photos as well)

did i miss something? apologize if this was in forum and i missed it.

I have recently installed garmin 24k west and SW maps onto 4gigmicroSDHC card.

I had to buy $10 microcard reader since the 4gig microcard-sd adapter was not read by my older drazzle multicard reader. No big deal.

Installed map onto microsdhc via card reader. It took about 6 hours to install the entire map. Same for Southwest garmin map as well. I suggest you start the install and go out with your buddies for a beer!

Otherwise works great on unit. Followed Oz instructions and the basecamp help menu.
good luck

thanks oz and maps4gps

FYI: the file was indeed listed as garmin and the file was  .img. However i renamed it CATOPO and also had the gpsr plugged in. Although my variables weren't controlled, it now works great

so thank goodness to these great forums!!

hi all
loaded calif topo into base camp. No problem. Then using card reader installed map onto 2 gb lexar mobile microSD card. Everything loaded just fine onto card(took 20min or so), got the succesfully loaded message.

then took card and placed it into dakota and started up unit. Went to setup, then maps then map info select map. Did that and the only map that showed up was the base map which was of course already enabled.  NO sign of the calif topo map in the menu, which is working just fine on basecamp and loaded successfully on card.

So are there only certain types of micro SD cards that work with dakota or am i doing something wrong.?

thx!

thank you for the response. I want to do this on basecamp. I was hoping to be able to actually type the coordinates in as a waypoint instead of using a pointer with my mouse. I do realize that the coordinates are shown in the bottom right but when i have to use the mouse i can't target precise coordinates. Is there a way to type in the coordinates as waypoint instead of clicking on map to enter the waypoint?

thx again!
