Map Making Support / Re: Routable Maps
December 31, 2013, 11:05:14 AM
When you install your map with MapSetoolkit, in the transparency box leave it as default and not "yes".  All my transparent maps will route in Mapsource/Basecamp.

Map Making Support / Re: Routable transparent map

I don't know anything about MapTK.  I use personal cgpsmapper to compile routable.  Your 60csx is capable of routing.  I have not made any transparent maps in quite a while except for one I'm doing now of the Appalachian Trail.  So far I have it from Springer Mt Ga to the northern border of Va and it along with 17 other transparent maps are on my computer and all will route in Mapsource/Basecamp. If they have an 0x4B background, then I use "S" but a lot of them I did not use a background object and I use "Y".  When sent to any of my gps they will route and they do not cover up any other map I have enabled.  The trick to making them route in Basecamp as I said earlier is to set the "Transparent" box in MSTK to "Default" and not "Yes".  This all works for me, your mileage may vary.

I make all my maps routable including the trails but I agree with Seldom and include everything in a single non-transparent  map.  One trick I did find is that if you want a routable transparent map of just hiking trails, horse trails etc. I use "Y" in gpsmapedit but when you use MSTK to install into Basecamp in the box for "Transparent" leave as "Default".  If you set that to "Yes" it will not route in Basecamp but it will route when sent to your GPS. Hope this helps.

I'll take a stab at this.  I've never owned a Vista HCX but I believe it is similar to my old 60 CSX.  When you first got the gps you probably were at home init sats and marked that location as "current". On the waypoint page is there one named Home or Current Location.  You can always change the name or delete if you wish.  I wonder that at the very start while you were at home you tried a tracbax or goto and never "stopped Navigating". With the map page open , press menu and see if there is a choice to "Stop Navigating" and if so select it. I know this sounds basic but sometimes you can overlook the obvious.  When you mark a launchpoint and name it "something", when you want to go back there select "Find" "Waypoint" "Something" and then "Goto".  Just and idea, hope it helps.

I've never had to run MSTK with admin rights before either.  It will install a map without them but it won't remove one without admin rights.  I installed a SSD this week and that was the reason for the clean install of OS but I have the old hard drive (same OS) and booted off of it yesterday and checked all my settings and they are all what I have on the SSD as far as I can tell.  I don't know, maybe I'm overlooking something.  Thanks for your reply Seldom

Seldom,
You're right, I just use mapsettoolkit to generate the other files.  I should have stated that.  I've been using Mapwel for a couple years and use mapsettoolkit for .tdb, etc and was using it to install in Mapsource until I came across JaVaWa. It seems that .gmap is the way of the future and making changes to your .img file and dropping it back in the folder is just as easy and maybe less troublesome as using registry.  Any ideas on the administrator part?

Map Making Support / Mapsettoolkit
April 18, 2012, 07:21:13 AM
I just did a clean install(Win 7/64) and after installing all my programs and getting back up to speed I tried to uninstall a map from Basecamp with Mapsettoolkit and it wouldn't uninstall until I opened Mapsettoolkit as administrator. My user account is administrator as it was before the new install and it never did this before.  Just thought I would pass it on in case anyone else had this problem.  One other thing, I've been using JaVaWa Mapconverter to make and install .gmap instead of using registry.  You still have to run mapsettoolkit but not use it to intall in mapsource.  Unlike Garmin's mapconverter it doesn't have to be in the registry to work.  Probably old news to some but I thought I'd pass it on.

That doesn't sound right to me either. I believe you can show multiple tracks on the 60csx. But if you have the original 60, that may be different.
That quote was directed to me and it was entirely accurate.  Thanks to the folks at Garmin, my map60sx will now display all 20 saved tracks at the same time.  One thing to remember....If you're on the track page and select a track and then select map, it will only show that track on the map.  If you're on the map page it will show all tracks (up to 20) that you have checked the "show on map" box.  I thought this was my problem at first.        lb

That's good to know about the multiple tracks, my Map60
csx will only display 1 of the 20 saved tracks at a time.  I was looking at a catalog that spelled out Birdseye compatible for the 550 but didn't mention it for the 450 and I made a wrong assumption.  Glad I checked.  I also got the French version at Garmin, must be a bad page.   Thanks for the info         lb

Two questions on the Oregon 450.  It appears that it does not support Birdseye imagery, is that correct?  Will it show multiple tracks on the map page at the same time or just one at the time like the GPSMap60CSX does?

OK, first of all...IT FINALLY WORKED!!!  Seldom-sn...to answer your question...It did NOT turn pink when selected with map select tool.  I went back to square one multiple times with the same results.  I talked to a computer programmer instructor at the college and they said that Windows 7 had a lot of issues with command line programs so I scrapped everything and downloaded Mapwel.  I spent a few days getting used to their system and got my trail looking like I wanted.  It's pretty user friendly after you get used to it.  Before I spent the $90 on the advanced version(so that I could export .img files) I sent them 2 emails asking about their compatibility with Windows 7, but have yet to get a reply.  Then I saw Seldom-sn's link in another post in "Map Making Support" about another "tutorial" on map making.  I started over again.  I opened cgpsmapper in my program files and copied  cgpsmapper..application        cpreview..application   sendgll..application.ext    all to my release folder along with my "map-name.mp" from mapedit.  Nothing would work unless all 3 of those files were there.  I clicked "Map-name.mp" and dragged and droped it on cgpsmapper.application and it converted to "Map-name.img".  Tool Kit would not accept this because it wasn't 8#.img.  I went back to map-edit....file..export..garmin.img...cgpsmapper and ended up with "Map-name.img" same as the other way.  I went back to map-edit..file...properties..left the ID with the same 8 digits but also put the 8 digits as the map name. It exported this time as 8#.img. I put it in toolkit and on to mapsource and gps. I tried the same thing in my release folder and dropped it on cgpsmapper and it worked there also. You guys are the computer genius, not me, I just know it worked.  I would be curious to know if anyone has used these programs with Win 7 and had any of the same results. Seldom-sn...Thank you, you're a good man to stick with me on this.  I know this is a long reply but this topic has stirred a lot of interest(maybe some laughs) being read over 900 times so maybe it might help someone else.  Thanks again to all       lb

Ok, I know you're getting tired of hearing from me, but things have finally started to work.  Yes Oz I did have the right program.  The only thing I changed was to put the cgpsmapper cpreview.exe along with the cgpsmapper.exe and sendg.dll which were already in the release-version-1.00 folder.  Cgpsmapper is still in program files.  Mapsettoolkit did it's thing and the map was installed in mapsource......But.....when you click on it with the map tool in mapsource or mapinstall in Basecamp it won't "register".  I've loaded many maps into gpsr in the past but this one doesn't want to move.  It zooms in and out and good detail but it won't load. Four or five files came back in the release folder when I converted from mp to img, is there something I needed to do with one of them? I'm sorry for the trouble but thanks again.       lb

OK, here's where I stand.  I've reinstalled cgpsmapper I think 7 times.  The last time I put it in a folder instead of program files and it seems to be working.  I don't know if that would matter or not.  I ended up with (36436410.IMG) but when I put it in mapedit to check it under file/properties/cgpsmapper.... the TRE changed from 1000 to 12 and transparency s changed to not transparent.  Problem 2: In the tutorial.. How to load img files into mapsource with mapsettoolkit(v 1.77 beta) on #17 ...Where does the typ or txt file come from?  I put 36436401.img in the TYP files box and compiled it and got 36436401.typ but   Install in mapsource and    Start  yielded  a    Convert Failed.   I don't think these solfware like my computer(New Dell,  Duo core, Win 7).  Could it be a compatibility problem?   Thanks for listening     lb                 PS: Seldom-sn, I have not re-written your code with the new path to cgpsmapper and tried it yet.

Ok, I followed your post exactly and still no img file.  I even went back to mapedit and started over just to make sure. Either I did the same wrong thing or somethings wrong. When I double clicked on makeIMG.bat I did get a small black screen as before for only a second.  You mentioned a blue command line window but I didn't see it.  Should I remove cgpsmapper and download it again?  (I tried to put the quote of your last post in here but when I did it wouldn't let me type without jumping all over   ???)  anyway, I'm still lost        lb
