I"m trying to simulate what you found with one of my maps but I seem to be able to edit them just fine.

Which map is it so that I can check that specific one.

Was there a garmin update on the device and do the show if you zoom way in? I wonder if Garmin changed something in the coding.

We're still good. I get the e-mails and normally delete the spam and block them. Doesn't help my time zone is (again) likely 8-12 hours off of you guys. 

With that said, I have a lot of Garmin smart watches but not too many of the handheld GPS units anymore. I think if I hiked more I would use them but my current profession doesn't really lend itself to that.

This site will stay alive for quite awhile though. It still gets a lot of traffic with a lot of downloads so it is worth it. Maybe in the future something will change again.

%contourfolder% is a variable. You set the location of your contour files on the first line:
set contourfolder="C:\your_map_folder\dem\"

Change the C:\your_map_folder\dem\ to whever you put your files.

You don't need the .exe for ogr2ogr in dos. Just make sure the FWTools folder before hand (version is correct). A lot has likely changed since 2016.

Also, you can put the bat file wherever you want; it does't matter. When it runs it goes to the correct folders based on the data set above.

If Garmin express doesn't recognize it its likely you can't load maps on it. Does it show the computer icon when you plug it in?

So... since I'll have to convert my maps and add a "pre-compiled" option to the website.  I take it I just build the img file with MapSource and upload that as pre-compiled?

Sounds like a pretty good plan. That or I should just download each and fix the registry bug if there isn't' a latest version for the same area. In the next couple weeks I'll start hitting each one and testing it.

That would be best but most data is already in WGS84/NAD83 which work "out of the box"

Additionally, the nautical data is relatively hard to come by. I tried to add some to my Arizona topo but since most lakes are man made they (the government) were hesitant to provide data since the depth of the lake changed very frequently.

The maps should not be locked unless you also loaded a map onto the page that you don't have rights to on the GPSr.

You can put maps on other drive and use symbolic links, look for info about mklink command.

Yes I definitely can... but can everyone else (or are you saying build it into the installer)?

There is actually an install script already in existence to work with the gmap; I thought I posted it somewhere before but perhaps it deserves another look.

All that it requires (in Windows anyway) is a shortcut in Garmin's default map directory to the actual location and Basecamp will find the map.

I started converting over but it seems like it really wants to load it to its directory on the C:\ drive which really is silly in the days of small SSDs for the OS and large hard drives for data (and yes, maps are data).
