GPSr Units / ETREX 20 Thembstick
March 11, 2013, 12:49:46 PM
I recently purchased an ETREX 20 on EBAY.

The unit seems to be new.

However, I am having problems using the thumbstick. It it is not clear to me whether there is something the matter with the thumbstick or if it is just clumsy me.

When I use the thumbstick, the display does not always move the way want it to go.

I have spoken to Garmin and the Garmin rep told me to practice and I would figure it all out.
The more I practice the worse it gets!

Does any other ETREX user find it difficukt to use the thumbstick?

I have a friend who has a Garmin Colorado. Someone gave him a kmz file I had created and told him to copy it to the Garmin Custom Map folder on the microsd card.

My friend did this and was amazed that the custom map did not show up on his GPS!

After several conversations with Garmin and me, finally sent the file to Garmin. He was told that there was no problem with the file. However, you cannot load the file to the microSD card by writing it there. The only way to do it was to use BASECAMP to load it to the unit.

My friend followed GARMIN's instructions and the Custom Map is now working on his GPS.

The Garmin employee admitted that with an Etrex you could write it. I know from experience that you can write the file to a Dakota and to a 62st.

I do not understand the difference between these other units and the Oregon,Colorado units. Why does the technique work on them and not the others?

Does what I am saying make any sense to any of you? or is it possible my friend is somehow confused with both sides of the instructions (mine and Garmin's)?

GPSr Units / Track Record Log Method Dakota 20
May 13, 2011, 05:23:31 AM
There are 3 choices on how to record track logs on my Dakota 20:
        -Distance
        -Time
        -Auto

If I select distance, the shortest distance I can input is 0.01 miles or about 53 feet. Is there any way of entering a smaller amount say something like 0.003 miles? The input screen has enough places but I cannot enter anything beyond the hundredths place.

All help is appreciated.

GPSr Units / Opening Screen on Dakota 20
May 12, 2011, 06:16:05 AM
I have lost something again!

I know I read somewhere how to place your own text on the opening screen of my Dakota 20. Now when I want to do it, I can't find it!

As I recall, there is a way to put your own text so that it will appear when the unit boots. I want to put my name, address, phone number, etc so that if I mislay/lose the unit whoever may find it will at least have a chance to get in touch with me.

Once again, all help is appreciated.

Thanks for all the previous help on this forum.

I am confused about how maps are loaded and named on the DAKOTA 20 I have.

I created and loaded to the /GARMIN/CUSTOMMAPS folder two GARMIN CUSTOM MAPS I created:
   -HARRIMAN 2007.KMZ
   -NYC METRO.KMZ

I also downloaded, created, installed and renamed several maps from the GPSDEPOT site. These maps were loaded to the GARMIN folder on the microSD card. The maps were:
-NY METRO TOPO.IMG, created from the NYTOPO file downloaded from GPSDEPOT as
GMAPSUPP.IMG and renamed to NY METRO TOPO.IMG
-CATSKILLS.IMG, also created from the NY TOPO file as GMAPSUPP and renamed.
_NEW JERSEY TOPO.IMG  created from the  NJ  TOPO file downloaded from GPSDEPOT . Again
GMAPSUPP.IMG was renamed  to NEW JERSEY TOPO.IMG

When I look at SETUP>MAP>Map Information, I see:
   -The two Custom Maps
   -The NEW JERSEY TOPO MAP
-A map called "mti_ny", subtitled "worldwide Autoroute Basemap"
   -A map called "Hxus039r" subtiled "HXUS039r"-US g2 v12". This map appears 3 times
-A map called "WORLDWIDE BASE MAP,NR". I presume this ios the map that came  with the unit.

I do not see the CATSKILLS map nor the NY METRO TOPO map.

I am guessing that I did something wrong and the NEW JERSEY TOPO map somehow overwrote the
2 previous maps.

All help is appreciated.

Using The Maps/Garmin Software / Do I need BASECAMP?
April 24, 2011, 06:09:51 AM
I have installed BASECAMP (I believe I cannot get/install MAPSOURCE because I have not purchased any maps on DVD from Garmin}.

I used BASECAMP to install the NY state TOPO downloaded from this site. I have also loaded some Garmin Custom Maps that I created. Installing the Custom Maps was straightforward. I juct copied them from my computer to the correct folder on my Dakota 20.

Can I do the same with other maps downloaded from this site or must I use BASECAMP to install them? I think I understand the issue of renaming the file that BASECAMP loaded before loading another file from here.

Both the NY Topo and the Custom Maps work fine on my unit.

I have no need for BASECAMP other than loading maps to the unit. I have my own separate system for saving tracks, waypoints, etc.

GPSr Units / Dakota 20 Bought on Ebay
April 08, 2011, 06:53:42 AM
I have just bought a Dakota 20 on EBAY. The GPSr came with no maps or any software.

I tried to register the unit with GARMIN and found (not surprised) that it was already registered. I have emailed them to find out how get around that.

Regarding maps, I have several Garmin Custom maps and have placed them in the \Garmin\CustomMap folders both in memory and on the microSD card. I expected that one would show up when I  locked on to satellites. This did not happen. The track appeared on a blank screen.

I did save the track and it appears to be accurate when I open it in other software.

How do I get my custom maps to show up on the screen?

All help is appreciated.
