GPSr Units / Removing maps from Nuvi 760
May 13, 2009, 09:54:43 PM
I have and use a Garmin GPSMAP 76 Cx for off road Jeeping. It functions well, but I just can't tolerate the screen. It's too dim and small for me to see while driving. It's useless if there's any glare at all and only readable, for me, if I ditch my distance glasses and put on my reading glasses. I recently bought a Nuvi 760 for my wife, but she doesn't bother to use it so I find myself stealing more and more often. I like it. The screen is bright and easily viewable by me.

I've downloaded three maps from here.

California Topo Map
Nevada Topo Map

... are both fine for hiking, but for me, as a Jeeper, they lack the off road trails and POIs that make a topo map useful when one is in the backcountry and trying to decide whether it's worth turning onto a trail to follow it.

This map: South West United States Topo has those trails and POIs that I was looking for.

I did install portions of the first two onto my Nuvi and was happy to see that the maps loaded and seem to work. I didn't try to navigate using them yet, but it's unlikely that I would every allow the Nuvi to guide me off road. There are too many mistakes like trails that appear on the Nuvi but don't actually exist on the land and visa versa to trust the Nuvi so far from civilization.

What I need to know is how to remove the maps that I have already loaded onto the Nuvi. I assume that they live somewhere on the SD card, but I don't know where.

Thnks for any help.
