GPSr Units / Garmin Watches
November 13, 2019, 06:35:29 AM
If Garmin sells additional maps that can be loaded on a particular Garmin watch (such as, for example, the Forerunner 945), and the watch is compatible with Basecamp, will I be able to load OSM maps and maps from GPSFileDepot onto that watch?

I was looking at JaVaWa GMTK (http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html) to manage my maps on my Garmin Oregon 450.

One feature of the program, apparently, is to identify potential issues with maps and the program indicates that the nctopo and gatopo maps have 3 map tiles in common.  Is this something that I need to worry about?

GPSr Units / Question Regarding Detail
October 09, 2011, 09:15:06 AM
I downloaded the Florida Topo map and installed it on my Oregon 450 using BaseCamp/MapInstall.  If I open the map in BaseCamp, it shows trails in a nearby state park (Wekiva State Park - N28 42.583 W81 27.768).  However, when I navigate to the location of the park on my GPSr, the trails are not shown.  For example, in BaseCamp, a trail passes near the the following co-ordinates:  N28 43.718 W81 28.644.  But on the GPSr, no trail is displayed at those coordinates?

Should this be the case, or do I have some setting set wrong?

I previously downloaded the following maps from this site:  the Florida TOPO map (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/123/)  and the SE USA map (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/101/).  I downloaded/installed them in my prior PC, into a "Maps" directory.   In addition, I successfully loaded the maps onto my Garmin Oregon 450.

I purchased a new lap top and copied the Maps" directory from my old desktop to my new laptop.
I had not bothered to mess around with MapSource or BaseCamp when I first downloaded the maps onto my desktop, but I would like to explore and investigate BaseCamp at this time.

I was following the tutorial at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-garmin-basecamp/ to view the maps in BaseCamp, but they are not in the "Maps" drop down menu.  So I was looking at the tutorial at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-.img-files-into-mapsource-with-mapsettoolkit/, but my situation does not seem to fit into either of the scenerios described in that tutorial.  I have a tbl file in each of the folders for the maps 9so the first part of the tutorial does not seem to apply to my case), but all my ".img" files have "all number names" (so the second part of the tutorial does not seem to apply to my case).

Am I missing something?  Or is there another way to get the maps opened in BaseCamp?  I guess I could delete the maps and reinstall on my laptop with the installer?

Thanks!

GPSr Units / Custom Map Disappears from Set Up Menu
October 06, 2011, 03:55:58 PM
I have an Oregon 450.

I created a Garmin Custom map using the tutorial posted on Garmin's site.  Everything seemed to work fine and I saved the file onto my card under the appropriate file name.  When I went into Set Up>Maps>Map Information, the Custom Map was listed, I was able to "Enable" the map and it displayed in the unit.  I later played around with my settings - changing my profile, resetting my track log and resenting my trip counter.  Then I turned the unit off for several hours.  This afternoon, I noticed that the map was not displayed and when I tried to confirm that it was enabled, I discovered that the was not listed under Set Up>Maps>Map Information.  I checked the card via mass storage, and the file was present.  I deleted it and reloaded via GE, and now the map again is listed in Set Up>Maps>Map Information and displayed in the unit.

Any idea why that happened?

Thanks.

General Discussion / Newbie question re DRGs
May 06, 2010, 02:47:06 AM
Hi, I am new to this site, digital maps and GPSr.  I am about to pull the trigger an purchase a Garmin GPSr - Oregon/Dakota or Colorado - but that decision is a topic in an unto itself!   :-\

I am planning a trip at the end of the month to the US VI - St John to be exact.  I plan to travel around the island and to do some hiking, etc.  I thought it would be a good idea to see what maps are available for St. John.  On this site, I found this list of maps http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/country/vi.

The "US Virgin Islands Topo" looks promising.  If I understand the information correctly, I can download this map and load it on my Garmin thru MapSource.  But according to the features matrix, this map does not have trails.

The "United States territories & protectorates" indicates that it does show trails, but the information page states that:
QuoteThese are USGS Digital Raster Graphics (DRGs) of the United States territories and protectorates plus the British Virgin Islands. For use with Global Mapper, MapWel, Moagu or any other GIS program.
???
Can someone explain what I would need to do with the downloaded file in order to use it on my Garmin - or point me to a link/tutorial that would explain the process.  Note, I understand that may likely be an involved and complex process, so if that is the case please excuse my ignorance - it is not my intention to waste anyone's time :-[

Thanks! ;D
