Map Making Support / possible?
February 26, 2010, 10:18:55 AM
Hi, if I have a contour quad I can not open in mapedit, but can in GM, is there a issue with taking
(1) a quad created with topo_process at 20 foot contour
(2) opened in GM and saved as .mp.
(3) Then opened saved .mp in mapedit, edit the levels to be the same as all other contour quads then
(4) combine with the rest of the base map mp's to .img?
I have done the first 3 and at this point do not see any problems, the 20 foot contours are there and so forth.
Thanks!

Map Making Support / map sizes
February 11, 2010, 08:21:00 AM
Good Day, There have been some posts about this but no real answers. I am about to finish (12 quads to go) my Washington state map. I am ending up with huge file sizes (Mount Olympus quad 1.4 gig) which I have been splitting in half. Last time I ran gpsmapper I had to quarter the mountain regions to get gpsmapper to handle them. This I believe lead to some seam issues (sudden gap in contours in 2 places). Question is: anybody really figured out what max size is for gpsmapper? I ask because last time it would run for hours them come up with an error which Stan from gpsmapper told me was file size (he advised splitting the maps the way I did). He mentioned then that a new version was coming which would no longer be size weird. At this point it will take my whole life to run any way since there will be over 70 mp files to run.
Thanks-Marc

Good Morning, the problem I had with my last map was when one was standing next to the pacific ocean if one zoomed out several times the ocean would disappear. I was making my map base today with the dictionary and I can not see the water until level 0 any way I can make it visible at the last level?

Map Making Support / a few questions
April 05, 2009, 08:59:55 AM
Hi, I am getting ready to finally finish my project. But have a few questions.
on a recent trip to Eastern Washington I had 2 versions of the map. One with the zoom settings as per the header from this site (23, 22, 20, 18, 17)  the other with some different (24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15)
both had pluses and minuses. But what I am looking for is the contours (20 foot)  to show up at something about one more level out from 800. At 800 in some areas one could not plan far enough ahead. Any thoughts?
And finally when is there just to much information. I found some shape files which have obscure information such as every bridge in the state and a few other weird ones. Thoughts.
Thanks-
Marc

Map Making Support / shape file boundries
March 11, 2009, 08:30:46 AM
I finally found a shape file for Washington which contains all the federal, state and county park boundaries, fish hatcheries and other interesting places.
When opening the file it always wants to open with these settings:
    *Left bounding coordinate: 600543.040949
    *Right bounding coordinate: 2550026.727108
    *Top bounding coordinate: 1355594.745190
    *Bottom bounding coordinate: 83579.754549
I of course can not change them. I can open the file and have a normal view in global mapper  but in map edit it opens in this huge square as if looking thousands of miles out. Any ideas of how to open in map edit? I would be able to open as parks that way.
I opened it in Global mapper and saved as mp but that mp is going to require a huge amount of editing in map edit.
Thanks

Map Making Support / registry error with installer
March 09, 2009, 07:50:07 AM
I created a installer but am running into problems. For some reason its creating a different family ID.
The installer lines are:
  !define MAP_ID              C10C             ; Family ID = 360 (dec) = 0168 (hex) = 6801 (hex flipped) --> http://www.geocities.com/binary_converter/
;  !define MAP_TYPE            11224          ; only if using custom types
  !define DIRECTORY           "C:\washington\"
  !define EXE_FILE            "${DIRECTORY}nw-wa_install.exe"
The family id created is a completely different. If I manually correct it things open on map source correctly. Do I need to remove the ; and assign a custom MAP_TYPE to correct this?
Thanks

Map Making Support / map id
February 13, 2009, 12:01:21 PM
I have a batch of quads ready to finish as .img files the really large ones are split into smaller bites. My question is does each map need a unique id and name? Thanks

Map Making Support / golf courses
January 31, 2009, 09:43:05 AM
I am still here. Any one know where I can get data that shows all the golf courses in Washington state? Now that I have been using Global mapper things are running quite smoothly. I want to ad more details to my final. Which I intend to run on Sunday if I get all the little things I am looking for.
Thanks-

Big title I know.
I sent a few copies to some people to go through to check integrity of one map. seems like a good thing to do before sending out.
A few things came up.
A) For some reason all the roads in Clallam county are duplicated, driving from here to there things where looking good, at the crossing of the county line I spotted it. It was persisted county wide. (opening in global mapper zooming in I see its true and not just the hand held) Any one else seen this? The transportation file was created with the topo_process.
Stan e-mailed me to inform me a new version of gps mapper is coming out with no memory limitations.
While looking at this map with another user I saw a high level of frustration on his part having to toggle back and forth while using the map. Any time he was zoomed out over 800' he of course had nothing because the map isn't transparent. He could not get a handle on toggling very well. My point is: if these maps are for general use they should be easily used. would it not be better to make them transparent, seems th only real hitch would be the major highways conflicting possibly.
I guess I need to run the transportation again.

Map Making Support / final problems
January 19, 2009, 10:31:01 AM
Hi all, seems I must have the most problems of the people working on a project.
For several days I have been attempting to get a mp to img with gps mapper. I keep coming up with a weird set of errors. After which I can never re-open the mp file with mapedit. I keep having to build a new one ending up in the same place.
Here is the error from gpsmapper usaully about 20 minutes after starting the process:

BE SURE TO READ LICENCE.TXT FILE WHICH COMES TOGETHER WITH CGPSMAPPER

bad allocation
I do not see a error above to work on

Then when I try to re-open the map I get several errors this one being the most common:

Once in a while it will tell me the map is empty even though it 1.6 gigs in size.
Any one else seen these errors?

Map Making Support / Water body
January 12, 2009, 07:44:07 AM
I am getting ready to finish my Washington state map but am hoping to overcome something. If one stands at 48* o1. 086 122* 42. 064 you are standing on a causeway between salt water bays. The base map for Garmin will show the water bodies, but when one downloaded all the NHD files for the state and make a (non-transparent) map you do not see them. You do see (on the handheld) the small stream which flows between them. The NHD files have every fresh water body I checked on but none of the strait of Jaun De Fuca, hood canal or so on. So would it be best to make the map transparent or change the levels in the header to something like 24, 23, 22, 20, 19, 18, and 17 (1-7). The map I made (olympic peninsula only in this case) used 24, 22, 20, 19, 18, 17.
Thanks-Marc

Map Making Support / Garmin mapsource headaces
December 21, 2008, 11:07:51 AM
Wondering if any one has had this happen. I created my .imp files placed into garmin custom folder. Map source would not show the maps, but thats not the issue. I dropped the files onto my micro sd disk. When I re-opened map source I ended up with a warning there is a problem with product 7 instillation, re-instal and open map source again. I went through all the registry issue's found on the net none of them solved the problem. So I removed everything, cleaned up the registry by hand and with Jv16 power tools. Did a fresh install from disk and upgrade down load to ver. 6. xx and still get the same error. Not only that I see my map on the sd card with the gamin file but do not see the map when I attempt to bring it up on the hand held (60 csx) geesh this is driving me nuts.

Map Making Support / can not see it
December 04, 2008, 01:16:12 PM
Hi, Forgive me if this is obvious (I did search the forum for a answer first) but I am trying to make a top mapo of just the Olympic Peninsula in my first attempt at this.
I think I have everything I need. When attempting to work with the NHD files in the command line I get this:

C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.3\bin>shp2pgsql "C:\My Documents\washington\hydro\
NHDArea.shp" NHD_Area > nhd_area.sql
C:\My Documents\washington\hydro\NHDArea.shp: shape (.shp) or index files (.shx)
can not be opened, will just import attribute data.
C:\My Documents\washington\hydro\NHDArea.shp: dbf file (.dbf) can not be opened.
C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.3\bin>
As one cane see the path appears correct because of the initial action it takes but I can not get any where else. Does any one see the mistake. Thank you in advance for any help.
I have fw tool installed, when I drag the shape files to the merge .bat files the black command screen comes up but disappears so fast I can not read what it does.
Maybe it there?
