I refreshed my pc.
Now I am working on getting everything reinstalled.
I ran into the BaseCamp issue with maps installed, but not showing.
I created c:\programfiles(x86)\Garmin\MAPS to put everything in one place.
The MY TRAILS file from jbensman fixed the topo install issue.
Everything shows great now, except for the MyTrails file... All I see are random black dots.  No clue why this is not working.

Anyway, for track management, I always liked MapSource better than BaseCamp.
I got the newest file from the Garmin site, but it says that it is an update file and gives an error that no previous version is found.

My questions are :

What is the newest and best (hopefully the same) version of MapSource?

Do I need to find an older version, install it, then update it?

I found the link with all the old versions of BaseCamp and MapSource, but I hate installing and reinstalling software over and over if I can help it.

I currently use a 60Csx on my ATV.
A couple of guys I know of use a Nuvi as well on the ATV for the screen size.

They are able to use topo apparently.

What Nuvi model will work best with topo?  I want one that can take track points as well.
I called Garmin to learn more, but they were not a big help.

Does anyone know what would work best?
The waterproof thing isn't a problem.  I would probably get a RAM box for it to keep it safe.

Hey guys and gals,

A friend of mine just purchases a Magellan (used) from another friend.
I know that the track files from the Magellan can be used with the Garmin.  I know, because the first owner has sent me files to add to the "big file".

My question though, is for the second friend. 
First, I know he cannot use the maps that I create.  (I use gpx2img, and can manually make them the hard way too.)  But, is there a way for him to load my track files to the Magellan?  I can send him the gpx file, but I don't know if that is possible.  I do know that apparently the gpx file works with Delorme.

I was surprised today when I was comparing the GPSMap62 to the Oregon units today.

I own a 60CSx.  I have been thinking about trying to add another GPS since I like mine so much.  I figured I would like a "better" unit even more, but I think I might be wrong.
First, the 62 only seems to have a better screen.  I don't see the advantage for me getting that one.
Then I looked at the Oregon.  The screen doesn't seem to be much bigger than the screen on the 60Csx!!??!!
I will be better off getting an automotive unit or the Nuvi 500 and loading topo maps to it and using it!!
What is the deal here??  I thought the Oregon had a much bigger screen?  I have never held one, so i guess that is why I didn't know it.

Will powering the 60CSx off of an iGo 12v cig. adapter in the car work ok with the mini USB tip?
I just wanted to check before trying it out.
I don't want to have to buy another GPSr.

I use my gps for riding atvs.  
It makes things easy when you don't have to worry about remembering which trail you took, and the best way to back track!!
I went riding a while back and the gps got a little muddy.
It was easy to clean off with a wet paper towel.
The last trip I took... well, let's just say that the unit was completely orange/yellow with mud.
When I got home, I really didn't have much of a choice, so I ran it under the water faucet in the kitchen.  Trying to wet down the dried up mud would have probably pushed it in deeper.
It is 95% clean now.  There is still some dirt around the edges of the rubber boots in the back of the unit.
My question is... is that a bad idea??
What is the best way to clean this thing?

My plan for my next trip, and future trips is to put a ziplock or gladbag around it.  Maybe take some rubber bands or a little strip of tape to keep it "safer".  haha

If I load the whole state of NC, I could cut off tiles??  Or the whole map?
What is the use?  I mean, i get hiding them I guess, but does this mean I can load multiple maps?
Or maps on top of others and close parts to see what is below?
I am confused.  I assumed that you can only have on map file at a time and that was it.  I get mixing maps (tiles) like the NC topo map, and the WV topo map from the east coast file.  I know how to do that.

I have tried and tried.
I have failed.
I need a dummy book or something.
Here is my situation.

I have some tracks and waypoints.
Two friends sent them to me.  Tons of them.
I took the tracks into MapSource and cleaned them up.  I joined a lot of the smaller ones, cleaned out some of the duplicates.  
So now, I have a gpx file and a gdb file with tracks and waypoints that i want to convert to a transparent map to load into my Gamin 60CSx.  One of my friends also has a Garmin, and the other has a Magellan.
I downloaded GPS MapEdit and I can't get the map to work right.  I must be an idiot.
Today, I found out about some software called Mapwel.
It seems easier to use, but I don't know how to export the map to a file.  I don't want to load it yet.

Is there a guide for extreme dummies, or has anyone else gone through this and knows what might be confusing me?  It seems easy compared to what some of you guys do with mapping software, so there has to be some way to do this simply.

Any help would be appreciated.

I own the Garmin GPSMAp60csx and love it!
I have been thinking about getting one for the car.
Which do you guys recommend?
I would like to have the track feature on it.  I really enjoy using/playing with the tracks from my 60csx. 
I have been reading a lot, and it seems that the 500 is the way to go, but I am not sure.
I can't tell the difference in the 500 and the 550.  It looks like it is the maps that are loaded on it.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

By suggestion from another thread, I downloaded GPSMapEdit.
I went through the tutuorial on their website.
I saved and opened the tutorial map, and deleted the contents.
I then imported my tracks, and they showed up fine.
What I am trying to do, is create a transparent map from some tracks made while riding ATVs.
I can create the file, but I do not know how to save it or export it to a map file. 

Can anyone suggest what i do now?

The friend that sent me the tracks for the trails in WV had them in there separately.
So, there are 19 tracks.

With the unit limit of 20, this could pose a problem.
I already set the unit to save tracks to the card so I can see them later.  I like looking at them in MapSource and playing around with them.
The problem is, the tracks he sent touch in a lot of places.  I thought I could join them. 
When I tried to join them, it wants to join it to the beginning of the next track instead of where the cross. 
What I really want is to take all 19 and make them into one track and have it show in a different color than the track that I am laying down. 
Does anyone know the trick to joining tracks?  Even if they don't touch, is there a way to have two different tracks become one?

Do I have to format the card before putting it in the GPS?
I bought a 2GB card.
The unit came with a 256MB card.
I took the 256 out today and put the 2GB in.
I am transferring some maps now through the USB cable straight to the device.
Next time, I am going to transfer maps straight to the card.
Just trying them out.

I am new to using GPS units and maps.. and mapping...

When I create a track on the GPS (60Csx, it's on the way) and pull it up on the PC, am I going to be able to send that track to other people?  Will I be able to create a new map with the track data?

Let's say I go on an ATV trip.  I find a new trail.  Then another, and another.
Pretty soon, I have filled up the 60 CSx with these new trails.  Or tracks.
When I get home, will I be able to create a map with that data?
If I made some trails around my house, and wanted to send a friend a transparent map of the tracks to add to his GPS, is that possible with the tracks I make?

I hope this isn't a dumb question.
