General Discussion / Proper Copyright Category?
October 12, 2012, 07:24:04 PM
I have created routable street maps for my area. I would like to copyright this data.

Currently I'm going in circles with the Copyright office, because they say it is not a map; they're expecting an image of some sort.

I'm saying it's not a 'computer program' because it doesn't actually 'instruct' or 'do' anything; it's more like a database or lookup table.

Regardless, there are questions as to which 'category' an electronic map falls under, with respect to the US Copyright office.

Has anyone registered their maps with the Copyright office? Would you 'know' which category these kinds of maps fall under? I'm guessing the same as Google or Bing, but they (USCO) don't seem to know which categories those are in...

Cheers!

Map Making Support / GPS MapEdit Addressing Schema...?
August 12, 2012, 07:03:09 PM
Due to the lack of (my being able to find) documentation on some of the features of GPS MapEdit, I am  having a bit of an issue with addressing...

I hope this is understandable...

I am trying this test with two roads; I'll call the 'main' road 'Main Street' and the side road 'Side Street'.

"Main Street" is about a half mile long, and addressing at the start is at '100', and at the end it is '400'.  This is actually pretty close to the actual addressing scheme.

"Side Street" is a couple of hundred feet long; it's the side street that my condo is on.

Side street connects to Main street about 1/4 from the 'beginning' of Main Street.

That is the basic setup.

When I try to 'find' an address (and I'm trying '388 Main Street', near a poi that exists with that address) I would 'expect' the destination to be close to the END of main street (near the '400'), but the GPS is telling me the destination is located 'just before' you get to side street, which is way off.  Adding numerical adjustments do not seem to cure the problem, and just makes me more confused.

Is there a 'train of thought' that I should be following and am unaware of?

Has anyone tried this, and obtained what they think are correct results?

What could I be missing (other than a few brain cells...) ?

Cheers!

Map Making Support / One Time Audio File?
July 09, 2012, 10:01:23 PM
I have a question. It may not be considered 'valid' due to the commercial nature, but still...

I create maps. I include these maps into GPS units that I rent through our Car Rental Agencies.

I sell custom POI's to our local businesses in the form of custom Icons, which makes them prettier on the map.

I have shied away from Audio files (other than on my guided tours) because if it distracts (or annoys) the user, then it becomes a hindrance, which defeats the purpose of having a GPS talk to you.

Since my island is only 30 miles long (and we're the largest in our region), I'm curious (and I haven't tested it) if you can set a large proximity (say 35 miles, much further than anyone can get by car) will the audio play only once when the GPS turns on, and (at least with respect to 'THAT' audio) stays quiet the rest of the time.

If I could be sure the file would play only once, during 'turn on' and not any additional time, then it might be worth trying to market.

Would anyone hazard a guess?  I haven't done too much audio development on this yet...

Hiya.

I use cgpsmapper with locking support.

If I create an 'unlocked' map, I can convert it to Mac format using Garmin's Mapconverter.

If I create a 'locked' map, I cannot convert it, even if I've generated an unlock code and entered it into MapSource or BaseCamp; I get an error during conversion saying that I need to unlock the map first, even though (as far as I know) I've unlocked it. I can view it, transfer the map to a GPS or SD Card, all the usual 'good indications'. But no conversion.

It does this on both my WindowsXP machine and my Windows7 machine, so I don't think it's an OS issue.  More likely, it's a 'me' issue, but I haven't figured it out yet.

I know not a lot of us use 'this' version of cgpsmapper, but I thought I'd ask for opinions and suggestions, as I've pretty much exhausted my meager brain...

cheers!

Map Making Support / Creating a Junction View File?
June 07, 2012, 09:27:15 PM
Would anyone have experience working with 'Junction View' files?

Because Garmin doesn't cover our area, I've created maps. I'm wondering if it's possible to create junction view files for main intersections and things like that.

Anyone? Bueler?

Cheers!
