General Discussion / dropping maps on my Garmin Etrex30
January 30, 2013, 12:18:34 PM
Hi, I'm just figuring out how to transfer maps from the interwebs (OSM and other sources) only my GPS.

I have a couple of questions:

Is there a qualitative difference between Base Camp and MapSource?

Is there any advantage in directly adding an .img file to the mini usb in the GPS unit, and if so, is there any way one can add to a mapsupp file?

I found that when I did the latter, it certainly was easier than loading maps through BaseCamp, but I could only load one map at a time as mapsupp - so I couldn't access all the data I needed.

Hope that made sense, thanks!

IMHO no one should venture into the back country without basic orienteering skills and a good laminated topo map. One should be able to find cardinal directions without a compass, know where to look for water, and have the ability to make a fire.

Unfortunately we live in a day and age when people will let GPS and other forms of technology substitute themselves for common sense and basic skills. The GPS is a superior nav aid but it does not in any way replace orienteering and survival skills in the back country.
