Thanks, I just found that, and have posted this there. :)

I am trying to become a Basecamp user for iMac.  I have used other applications on Windows in the past for organizing and managing my GPS files, namely Topofusion.  All I do is create waypoints and upload to GPS, and then download my tracks and waypoints when I return, saving this data for future reference.

In using Basecamp, I am doing what they call, creating a blank "list", and then dragging my .gpx file over to this list and renaming it to something meaningful, such as 2009-Mt-Rainier-Hike.  A problem I am finding is that upon bringing the data into Basecamp, it assigns a brand new "created on" date that gives today's date and time, rather than retaining the original data.

Does anyone have any tips for Basecamp users who are migrating existing data to the system?  The product is completely useless to me if it loses accurate date and time information.  All of the support information and tutorials are naturally geared towards a user integrating with their current Garmin product, and are not concerned with organizing and managing data from an earlier time.

Thanks!

I definitely am not looking for any GIS applications.  MacGPS Pro would probably work, but is based on the obsolete concept of paying $50 for each state's topo maps.  I don't think I can justify spending hundreds of dollars for this.

I may just install Paralells on my iMac and continue to use Topofusion if Basecamp is giving me too many problems.

Basecamp seems reasonable enough if I were starting all of this from the very beginning and working withing their system.  I already have years worth of trip's waypoints and tracks stored as .gpx files.  I have named these files in an easy to understand system for organization.  Basecamp wants to pull these files all apart and implement a completely different file management scheme.  I don't begin to understand how you are supposed to migrate your existing data into this new system, and I really don't feel like spending weeks of spare time making it work.  Has anyone else had this issue?

General Discussion / What mapping software for iMac users?
September 27, 2015, 09:41:18 PM
I just migrated from Windows to iMac after years of using Topofusion to organize, plan, and otherwise view and edit all my GPS files for planning and documentation purposes.  I only used Mapsource, and later Basecamp to manage the uploadable maps that I get from this site as a fantastic resource.

I haven't immediately found a decent substitute for the functional simplicity provided by Topofusion.  Basecamp is unnecessarily complicated.  All I want is to be able to save .gpx files with my waypoints and tracks, and to view them and upload/download from my GPS.  Basecamp seems to really want to create some complicated file management system that I simply don't need.

What do other iMac users use for their main mapping and file management system?  Why?

Thanks in advance!

Has anyone successfully found this?  I can't find a valid torrent out there.

Annual bump.

Anyone working on Mexico?

Bump.  Anything?  Is there a reasonably priced commercial product?

Every couple years I do something down in Mexico where I would love to have a topo map set to load in my Garmin.  This time I am going down to southern Baja.  It looks like there was something linked to on this site but that link is currently unavailable.  Anyone have any luck with Mexico?  Thanks.

General Discussion / Re: Any topo maps for Europe?

Freizeitkarte was exactly what I was looking for, thanks.  Topo maps for the Alps.  Urban for everywhere else.

General Discussion / Any topo maps for Europe?
February 06, 2013, 06:38:23 PM
All I found for Western Europe was the unsatisfying land cover map I just downloaded called World Map East.

Looking for something for mountain / hiking use.  Maybe I need to buy from Garmin?

Thanks.  I just tried a different micro-sd card and loaded three tiles from the same Grand Canyon area from the SW Topo USA set.  I then changed all the settings you suggest with the exception of text which does not have an "auto" setting on my unit.  Still the same.  Basemap is there, I can pan across the country to the three tiles, and zoom in and see that they have uploaded.  Points of interest that would otherwise not be present are there, such as geographic feature "holy grail temple".

I am out of ideas, but I need a functioning GPS too much to live w/o one for much longer.  Are the 62 series models just as good as the 60 in terms of antenna and reception?  That's what I liked the most about the 60 since it gets a reading even in the forest.

Tried reflash of the firmware.  I am not sure Garmin is worth calling.  This unit is 5 years old perhaps?  Definitely out of warranty, and since one of the main reasons for using the maps in this website is to avoid the outrageous pricing for the proprietary maps that Garmin sells, I am not sure why they would care that these maps are not working.  I have never purchase a map set from Garmin in any way, and I don't think it is worth paying and using an unlock code on this one just to verify that it can no longer display topograhic lines, only transportation features and geographic labels for features that are not being displayed.

I tried loading a few tiles from the Grand Canyon in SW USA Topo.  Attached is a photo of what I get on my screen.  Again, I have reinstalled the firmware.  On the screenshot it shows the color green which is for public lands I believe, and it includes labels for features in the park.  You can see the scroll over that read Grand Canyon National Park.  I even panned over to somewhere in the park that had a very small transportation feature in red, that when you scroll over it reads "Ramp".  The only thing that no longer comes through are water features and Topo lines.

Thanks everyone for your patient help.  I will check back in from time to time, but I may need to buy one of the new ones.

I forgot that the Basemap is always there.  I just went in and selected to show Basemap and all I get are points, some of which are numbers, some of which are towns, cities, places.  No water boundaries, no roads.  I have selected "Restore Defaults" frequently to ensure I have not erroneously selected some dumb setting that is causing all this.

So a question is that if my Basemap is not performing normally, in other words not showing basic features as it should, then perhaps the problem is with this unit.  Maybe it got wet one too many times and is on the fritz. :o

Here are the things I have tried.
I tried reformatting the 2gb micro-sd card.
I selected only 2 tiles from the NW Topo USA map set so I could repeat the testing faster than building the whole state at the same time.
I reset the GPS map settings to default.
When I go to a known point in the mountains on the map tile using the "Find" button on the unit, it shows a light green tile surrounded by the "xxxxx" pattern when the unit has no data.  This indicates to me that the unit has received the map.  When I zoom in on the particular tile, some labeling specific to the tile displays, such as the name of the designated wilderness area.  What I don't get is any topographic map features at all, nada.  For other tile sets all I get are the transportation lines for roads.  This is not the "Basemap" that comes with the unit, because once you build a mapset and send it to your GPS, the original "Basemap" gets wiped away.

So basically, Basecamp appears to transfer the map correctly as per all the instructions available on this great website.  My GPS shows indications of having received the map files, but for some reason they are missing the topographic information, or something has gone crazy with my unit where it now fails to show this.

I will try testing with some other topos not in my area to see if this happens for everything.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or tips.

Bump.  Still having these problems.  I would prefer not to reinstall everything but that may be my next step.

Fortunately I know how to use paper maps with compass the old fashioned way.  Technology fails, invariably.
