Just read about jbensman and his POI maps.  WOW!

I will e-mail them to you by the end of the week.

And yes, I realize they will only be usefull on the handheld.  That's not a problem, as I can just draw them as tracks in Mapsource.  It doesn't have a 20 saved track limit :)

Thanks again for the help guys.

And jbensman: Would you prefer to have the gpsmapedit file I have saved where the trails and roads are embedded as polylines (converted from tracklines) or the original mapsource file with the trails and roads saved as tracklines?

Also have them in KMZ form.  Whatever you prefer.

Thanks a ton for the replies.  I downloaded the gpsmapedit and cgpsmapperfree software.  I'm playing with it and learning a lot.  The main issue I'm having is getting from a .MP file in gpsmapedit to an installer file that will allow Mapsource to display the polylines.

I'm getting there!

Thanks again

I've got a Garmin 60CSx.  I've loaded the MS Topo in Mapsource.  I need to be able to see some roads and trails that are not marked on the Topo map.

My original plan was to draw tracks that overlaid the roads, save them, and load them to the GPS unit.  However, I quickly learned that the 60CSx limits you to 20 saved tracks, and I have about 75 to load.

Is there a way I can edit the MS Topo map to draw in some roads, or overlay my own lines on the screen to show my camp roads?

Another option I thought of is to just combine several of the tracks by "doubling back" on them and continuing into another road without beginning a new track.  I would really like to prevent having to do this, as it would be a pain.

Skidmark, You sure are handy with a manual considering you don't even own this unit.  That worked perfectly and is EXACTLY what I wanted to do.  Now I can quickly wipeout my unit and load situation specific GPS files onto it.

THANKS!

You other guys, I appreciate your help as well.  Thanks!

On page 63 of the manual under " Trip Computer Page Options Menu " it mentions
about being able to select individual items, select all and unselect all. Will this do
what you need? I Don't have a 60CSx so not sure but sounds like it would work.

Does the 60CSx stay in a normal mode when connected to the computer or does
it act like the Nuvi's and becomes a mass storage device?

On my 276c I can delete all the waypoints, tracks and routes on the unit and if
I saved them on the PC send them all back.

Thanks for the help guys!  I'm going to try all this stuff, but it already sounds like it will work just fine and is exactly what I was looking for.  I have all my waypoints/tracks/routes saved in subject specific files, so being able to delete everything except the maps is ideal.  Then I can selectively load back onto the unit what I plan on using in the immediate future.

Thanks again!

Skid, the 60CSx does not behave as a mass storage device unless that option is selected from the unit while connected to the PC.

I combed through my users guide on this one, and I'm pretty sure I'm asking for instructions to do something that is not possible.  It's worth a shot though.

I use my GPS for boating, hunting, and work.  You might imagine that over time I build up quite a large collection of user waypoints and saved tracks.  I organize these waypoints and tracks on my computer by saving individual Mapsource files with related information, e.g. all data having to do with my hunting camp is saved in its own Mapsource file.

The problem is that while all of the data is separated and organized on my computer, it's completely combined and cluttered on my 60CSx unit because it is so time consuming to delete waypoints and saved tracks on the unit itself.  I want to be able to clear off large amounts of data from the unit quickly without wiping out any map data, preferably from my computer.  The only way I know of to delete user waypoints is 1 by 1 from the gps unit.  Ugh.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I agree with Oz.  You can get a card reader on E-Bay for less than $2 shipped.  How they ship from China for less than $2 I have no idea.

usmeagle,

Your problem definitely lies within the transfer process to you 60Csx.  I have the same unit with a 2GB microSD card.  When transferring large file sizes, you almost have to use a third party transfer method.  I don't think MapSource will even let you begin to transfer file sizes over a certain threshold.  What size data card do you have?  You need to make sure you have the capacity to transfer.  The file size of your map selection is shown in the lower left region of the screen in MapSource when you're highlighting map blocks to transfer.

I use a card reader to transfer map files to my 60Csx.  They're cheap on Buy.com and E-Bay.

Hope you get it worked out.

You guys are talking way over my head.  It sounds like you have access to 2 different sources of topography data, and they don't match up in certain areas.  Personally, I've seen several instances of USGS Quadmaps being incorrect with regard to stream flow routes, road locations, etc.

Whatever you decide, don't do it on account of me.  I live in MS and sometimes go back to where I used to live in southwest VA to hike/camp/canoe.  I'll make it either way, and it's not like I would use the information daily.  I have, however, used the MS topo quite a bit, and it is AWESOME!  I have Garmin's Topo DVD, and I might as well throw it away.  50 ft. topo lines just don't tell you much when there's only 30 ft changes within 10 miles.

Also, I have only figured out how to load the maps with installers.  I haven't been motivated yet to utilize the overlay images on their own.  If it was me making the map, I'd probably want to work on it till I got it right.  No hurry.

Again, THANKS!

Hey guys,

I'm new to the site, and I noticed that a majority of the state topo maps are available and more are coming out every day.  I was just curious to know if anyone was working on a Virginia Topo map?

I can't say thank you enough to those who have put in their time to make these maps available to the rest of us.
