Sadly, the problem is worse.  My husband has a laptop with Win 7 (same as my old one) that he let me install it on.  Same display issues for the same states.  Some work, some don't, but of course the state that matters most (the one I live in) doesn't work.

Ticks me off to have spent so much money on discs that are now just coasters.  I can't even be bothered to look for a replacement.  Stick a fork in me, I'm done.  This whole situation ha actually just about killed my desire to mess with my maps, trails, or gps ever again.

They sold the software to AllTrails and neither one support it, at least I haven't found anywhere that does.  The old TOPO email addresses bounce.

Using recommended compatibility settings, Topo will open.  I can activate a state, and it will let me copy all the discs to my hard drive, but then when I zoom in to the most detail, it will either tell me to insert a particular disc, or it will pretend it zoomed but just display a white screen.  Any ideas/suggestions?

AHA! :) That makes sense then.  I could have used a card reader, but I just let it run overnight while I was sleeping, so I left the card in the GPS.

Thanks again for your help.

Thank you so much for that very helpful information!  Now that you mention it, I do recall hearing about the "new" 100k Topo and it being less segments.  I'm out of the loop these days -  I took about a 3 year hiatus from hiking and horseback riding (got my master's degree and some family health issues), but I'm going to start back up.  The 24k maps from this site have always been very good, so I may not bother with the Garmin ones.

FYI, I looked at the file structure and the latest MapInstaller through Basecamp did actually send each map as it's own img file.  For instance, motopo was installed as motopo.img.

Thanks again!

I have a new Garmin Montana 610.  Previously I had a 60CSx and then one of the Oregon units, I forget which.  I've always used Mapsource to transfer data back and forth, no problem.  Obviously, newer units don't talk to Mapsource the same so I bit the bullet and installed Basecamp 2.3.0.0 (hate it).

Basecamp and Mapsource both show all of my maps, which includes Garmin's US Topo (100k) plus several custom maps from this site and that I've made myself.  I can load all of my custom maps to the Montana, but not any of the US Topo.  I've tried several times.  The only thing I haven't tried is a partial load of just some segments instead of an entire region (ie East or West).

Am I running into a map segment limitation?  The file sizes are all well under 4 GB.  I'm installing them to the micro SD card, which is 32 GB.  Total maps if all are selected (including full US Topo East, West, Alaska, and Hawaii) is about 3 GB.

I'm not very knowledgeable but I find it ironic that the only product that I can't get to work with a Garmin unit is the Garmin map product!

Thanks!

Disregard - I had forgotten to update my Mapsource to 6.13.7 after I installed it.  Custom maps now working!

My husband, trying to be nice, just bought me a new laptop, with Windows 7 64-bit.  Unfortunately, even when I try to install "My Trails", I run into a problem with Mapsource.  The map shows in the dropdown, but when I select it, it pops up with an error message and closes.  As long as I leave it on a Garmin map, Mapsource works ok.

Any more suggestions?  I'm about to throw this damn thing into the horse's water trough so I can keep using my old desktop.  Did I mention I hate Windows 7, and I hate new computers?

Way to go!

Just an update - I noticed there was an updated version of the MT Topo map, so I uninstalled my old one, downloaded, and installed the new one.  It now works fine with both Mapsource and Basecamp.  (I did use MapsetToolkit to look at the FID, and it was 46XX for the original version, and 1 for the new one.)  I don't know what the cutoff number is for the FID, but all is good now.

Thanks for all your suggestions!

Thank you all for the suggestions.  I have MapsetToolkit so will start with the FID's that are assigned first.

I have an Oregon 550, and I want to update the firmware.  However, it warns me that I must follow a certain procedure if I ever want to use Basecamp in the future.  Currently I use an old version of Mapsource, 6.13.7.

I also have several custom maps installed in Mapsource, most of them downloaded from this site, but a few from external sources and a few of my own.

I have downloaded and installed Basecamp, but it errors on the Montana topo (from the link on this page here  http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/3/  ).  It tells me to remove that map and start Basecamp again.  I can't say that I really want to remove that map, because it will remove it from Mapsource as well.  I vaguely recall there being an issue with the family or product ID, but can't remember what it was.

Can anyone help me figure out how to get the map to work in Basecamp, or make it so that Basecamp can't see it but Mapsource can?

Thanks!

You can only display one mapset at a time in Mapsource.  For the gps, it will depend on the draw priority of the maps you send to the unit.  City Navigator will show on top of everything, but many of the free transparent maps will layer on top of each other and disply, and on top of the Garmin US Topo.

From this page on AA's website:

http://www.aa.com/i18n/travelInformation/baggage/carryOnAllowance.jsp&anchorEvent=false

Devices that cannot be used onboard include:
Radios - AM, FM, VHF, battery or cord operated TV sets, TV cameras
Electronic games or toys with remote control, except those installed on the aircraft
Cordless computer mouse
Portable Global Positioning System (GPS.)

A simple search for "gps" on their site brought this page up.
