Another issue is that water levels change. This can be adjusted for on certain boating units but it will never be that accurate.

You make an interesting point that I hadn't considered. The map may never be accurate enough for what I want.

Thank you both for your responses.

I was looking for a depth map (chart) for Quabbin reservoir and I was hoping that one of you could point me to one.

Thank you,

Bob

I don't know. What kept me away from a GPS with a touch screen is having to take off your gloves to use the GPS.

I'm not much of a fan of touchscreens on GPSrs myself, but I use "digital" gloves (with one of those little patches on the index finger) on both my OR and Nuvi and they work with gloves on.  I use Head digital running gloves on the mouse pad of my laptop when I'm doing astrophotography at night.  They work fine below 0F.

I will keep those in mind. Thanks for the info.

Will rain effect the Montana or Oregon?

I don't know. What kept me away from a GPS with a touch screen is having to take off your gloves to use the GPS. I recently purchased the Garmin62s and I am very happy with it. The maps and information here are a great resource.

Boyd,

Thanks for the quick and detailed response.

I am not looking to build a route at this point I just want a bearing to go direct to that way point. Is there anyway to shut the routing off in the 62s?

Thanks,

Bob

ETA:

I figured it out:

Main menu - routing - activity needs to be set to direct. You need to scroll to see the setting.

General Discussion / Garmin 62s "route calculation error"
December 26, 2014, 09:46:53 AM
Every time I try to navigate to a way point I get the "route calculate error maps do not have routable roads in this area" and the gps dumps me to the map screen without setting the GPS to navigate to that point.

The software in the GPS is up to date.

I am using the NE USA topo from here and I have disabled all other maps.

Activity is set to hiking

Lock on road is set to NO

Avoidance setup is set to avoid Ferries

Route recalculation is set to OFF

I am not new to GPS' as this is my third Garmin but I am at a loss here. Have they made it so that I have to but their maps as well or am I missing something.

I appreciate any help that you have to offer.

Thanks,

Bob
