GPSr Units / Garmin Watches
November 13, 2019, 06:35:29 AM
If Garmin sells additional maps that can be loaded on a particular Garmin watch (such as, for example, the Forerunner 945), and the watch is compatible with Basecamp, will I be able to load OSM maps and maps from GPSFileDepot onto that watch?

I was looking at JaVaWa GMTK (http://www.javawa.nl/gmtk_en.html) to manage my maps on my Garmin Oregon 450.

One feature of the program, apparently, is to identify potential issues with maps and the program indicates that the nctopo and gatopo maps have 3 map tiles in common.  Is this something that I need to worry about?

Thanks.

I note that in the case of Garmin Custom Maps, there is a concept of "Draw Order," which is on a scale of 1-100 (see, http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Custom+Maps#FAQ-CM7.%29%20How%20does%20Draw%20Order%20affect%20my%20Garmin%20Custom%20Maps?).  Is that different from the "Draw Priority" that you reference?

Also, what happens is both maps have a "Draw Priority" of 31?  Or otherwise have the same "Draw Priority"?

Okay, I figured out what was wrong.

I had recently transferred my maps and BaseCamp to a new laptop (see http://forums.gpsfiledepot.com/index.php/topic,2394.msg13826.html#msg13826).  I had to reinstall my maps.  I then reloaded the re-installed maps to my OR450 using BaseeCamp.  I distinctly remember loading both the Florida Topo and the SEUSA.  Nevertheless, it appears that the new version of the Florida Topo did not load onto my OR450, but an older version was loaded (or remained).  Per the change log for the Florida Topo, the older version did not have trails.  So, I reloaded the Florida Topo and the trails are showing as expected.

Seldom, thanks for your help and patience with this issue...I apologize for the user error... :-[

BTW - The point you mention in your last post, is another item I have been pondering.  Other than "trial and error," is there any way to determine which maps will obscure others?

The coordinates referenced in my original post (N28 43.718 W81 28.644), lie on or at least in close proximity of a trail, but no matter how much I zoom the trail does not show on the display.

Not sure what I am doing wrong?

Edit - I Inserted coordinates that I believe are located on a trail. 9N28 43.718 W81 28.6440).

In Setup|Map|Advanced Map Setup, I have the following settings:

  • Zoom Levels->All set to "Auto"
  • Test Size->All set to "Auto"
  • Detail ->Most
  • Shaded Relief->Do Not Show

But trails do not show.  I assume the trails are showing on your OR300?

GPSr Units / Question Regarding Detail
October 09, 2011, 09:15:06 AM
I downloaded the Florida Topo map and installed it on my Oregon 450 using BaseCamp/MapInstall.  If I open the map in BaseCamp, it shows trails in a nearby state park (Wekiva State Park - N28 42.583 W81 27.768).  However, when I navigate to the location of the park on my GPSr, the trails are not shown.  For example, in BaseCamp, a trail passes near the the following co-ordinates:  N28 43.718 W81 28.644.  But on the GPSr, no trail is displayed at those coordinates?

Should this be the case, or do I have some setting set wrong?

Strange...I installed the SE Topo and it loaded into BaseCamp as advertised in the tutorial.  So, I uninstalled the Florida Topo again and reinstalled it...now it shows up in BaseCamp as well...go figure! :D

I uninstalled both maps, and downloaded the each again.  I installed the Florida Topo, but it is not loading into BaseCamp?  Following this tutorial (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-garmin-basecamp/), the only map that shows in the Map Dropdown menu or under View>Map Products is the "Global Map." ???

Note, in case it makes a difference, I am running Windows 7 (64bit).  When I installed the map, the installer wanted to install it under my Programs (86x) directory, but I prefer to collect my maps under a "Maps" subdirectory that I created in a directory where I save other stuff relating to my gps.

EDIT - I rebooted my laptop, but it did not make any difference.

You have a gift for understatement!   ;)

I previously downloaded the following maps from this site:  the Florida TOPO map (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/123/)  and the SE USA map (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/101/).  I downloaded/installed them in my prior PC, into a "Maps" directory.   In addition, I successfully loaded the maps onto my Garmin Oregon 450.

I purchased a new lap top and copied the Maps" directory from my old desktop to my new laptop.
I had not bothered to mess around with MapSource or BaseCamp when I first downloaded the maps onto my desktop, but I would like to explore and investigate BaseCamp at this time.

I was following the tutorial at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-garmin-basecamp/ to view the maps in BaseCamp, but they are not in the "Maps" drop down menu.  So I was looking at the tutorial at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-.img-files-into-mapsource-with-mapsettoolkit/, but my situation does not seem to fit into either of the scenerios described in that tutorial.  I have a tbl file in each of the folders for the maps 9so the first part of the tutorial does not seem to apply to my case), but all my ".img" files have "all number names" (so the second part of the tutorial does not seem to apply to my case).

Am I missing something?  Or is there another way to get the maps opened in BaseCamp?  I guess I could delete the maps and reinstall on my laptop with the installer?

Thanks!

GPSr Units / Re: Custom Map Disappears from Set Up Menu

I had deleted the file from my card and reloaded the file.  I played around with the prifiles and changed from one to another and the behavior was not repeated.  The map file shows up.

I have now set the profile to "Recreational," as you suggested and everything seems to be fine.

Not sure what happened?

Thanks again.

GPSr Units / Custom Map Disappears from Set Up Menu
October 06, 2011, 03:55:58 PM
I have an Oregon 450.

I created a Garmin Custom map using the tutorial posted on Garmin's site.  Everything seemed to work fine and I saved the file onto my card under the appropriate file name.  When I went into Set Up>Maps>Map Information, the Custom Map was listed, I was able to "Enable" the map and it displayed in the unit.  I later played around with my settings - changing my profile, resetting my track log and resenting my trip counter.  Then I turned the unit off for several hours.  This afternoon, I noticed that the map was not displayed and when I tried to confirm that it was enabled, I discovered that the was not listed under Set Up>Maps>Map Information.  I checked the card via mass storage, and the file was present.  I deleted it and reloaded via GE, and now the map again is listed in Set Up>Maps>Map Information and displayed in the unit.

Any idea why that happened?

Thanks.

The US Territories and Protectorates Zip file appears to be scans of USGS quadrangles.  You could print it on paper or incorporate it into a raster based map (Beyond the scope of this answer). Windows will unpack the Zip.  Then use something like 7Zip to unpack the RAR.
Could I use something like Garmin Custom Maps or Moagu/G-Raster to convert into a raster based map?
