That is standard (the stream thing) with the NHD data because of how they make the data.

I was just curious if we could change the body of water and the stream to the same color, the stream lines would not show through the body of water, it would blend in the background color of the body of water.

Hi,

Just checking out the Washington 24K Topo.  I found a few things.

1. Highway 101 is in the water on the west coast by N47 42.772 W124 25.011
2. The strait to the Puget Sound is missing the bodies of water.  The Columbia river disappears at Interstate 90.  It comes up Tan like the land color.
3. There is funny looking contour errors out in the sea on west coast.  I saw the same thing when I was processing Dem files too.  It looks like needs crop to the State borders.
4. The Interstate Flags are missing.

Overall, the contours look good.  The streams look good until it runs into a body of water, since the body of water and streams are two different colors, the streams show though on the lake as well, but I noticed that on the Idaho and Nevada topo as well.  I haven't tried it on the gps yet, just looking at it with Mapsource.

I'm going to try using MemTurbo and see if I can free up the physical memory for GPSmapedit.  It's good at pushing physical memory off to virtual cache way before it runs out of physical memory.

I convert the shp to mp files with GPSmapedit?

The water files showed up.  I requested a few this morning, I had them before noon.

I'm a complete newb trying to make topos of a few places in Texas using Oz's tutorial, but I can't get the DEM to download.

I've downloaded dem2topo and the excel sheet.  I copied the DEM link to my Explorer's address bar.  I got 4 ArcGrid quads, I didn't see any GeoTiff download, so I clicked Modify Data Request and changed the data format to GeoTiff and saved the changes.  I got one download in a GeoTiff format that is 232mb.  I click download and get a pop-up that says:

Current order status

Extracting data...

Please wait for the data to be returned.

After a couple of minutes, the window changes to:

The data extraction has completed.

If an error occurs during download, click here to retrieve the download bundle.
After one hour, the download bundle will be automatically deleted from our server.

I also get an information bar that tells me that explorer has blocked this site from downloading, click for more info.  I click on the bar, select "download"

The window changes back to:

Current order status

Extracting data...

Please wait for the data to be returned
.

And that's where I get stuck.  My data is never returned.  I've got Vista on my laptop.  I'm currently running default security settings, but I've tried adding the extract.cr.usgs site to my trusted sites and resetting the security to low.  I'm not too computer savvy, as y'all have already guessed, but I'm thinking this can be solved by changing a security setting on Explorer.

Can anyone  help?

PD

My internet explorer blocked every one.  I just clicked "here" and the save file box pops up.

I'm getting vitural memory errors at 1/3 of the way of loading the shapefiles in mapedit.  I have 2 Gigs physical.  6 Gigs vitural.  Error out at 2.5 G paged.  I have it at 40ft contours.

The directions for Combining say something about loading mp dem files?

I thinking of trying Transparent Topo while I wait for the water files to show up.  Topo that shows up on City Navigator, it would be cool to the see it in action.

Just ran across the page to download national watershed shape files.

http://www.epa.gov/waters/data/downloads.html#national

Just curious if the detail is just as good.  I just started downloading the 2 files to try out.

John

Attaching a picture of what in the shapefiles.  It's looks incomplete for certain states.  Gpsmapedit would not open for the biggest file, I had to use arcExplorer.

I found a list of sub-basins for washington at this website.

http://cfpub.epa.gov/surf/locate/hucperstate_search.cfm?statepostal=WA

There is 73 total for washington.  You can look up other states there too.

Ok.  It's working for topo, it making shape files.  Is it normal for it not make a shape file for certain quads, or do I need to have one for every quad.  The very first quad there wasn't a shape file created.

The user name was missing on the settings page.  I added it back in and clicked save settings, and started topo without combining files.  It's spitting out ####.prj and ####.dbf plus contour.shp

On the dem, I need to run this with Combine contours into one file?  I tried without and I had a bunch of prj files and it kept starting over coutour.shp

Can we use the ftp for water data if we had a list of numbers to download, it could be automated?
