GPSr Units / Re: Garmin 62S-Invalid JNX File
January 06, 2012, 09:16:40 AM
Boyd,
Thanks for your rely.  Yes, as a matter of fact, I did try a sample Birdseye file but I have not subscribed to it yet.  Since I plan on subscribing, should I just leave the error message alone and see if it goes away with a subscription to Birdseye?

GPSr Units / Garmin 62S-Invalid JNX File
January 05, 2012, 01:01:11 PM
I am really excited about my new Garmin 62s.  I have used a 60CSX for a long time and am very pleased with it too.    But I have a small problem with the 62s that I cannot fix and need some help.  Each time I turn on my new 62s, I get the following message, "Invalid JNX file."  I press OK and move on.  But I would like to fix whatever is wrong and not get this annoying message anymore.  Does anyone have a solution for this issue?  Thanks in Advance

GPSr Units / Re: Using GPS on Commercial Airlines

Thanks for posting that info.  I followed the link and learned a lot.  I think I will still carry my GPS on most airlines and see what happens.

Thanks for all the feedback.  Lots of good info there.  The links were useful as well.  After the stewardess told me that my GPS was prohibited, I looked through the American Airlines magazine and other documents for their list of prohibited items.  As I scanned the list, I did not find a GPS on the list.  So I am beginning to think it is sort of "discretionary" on the part of they flight crew.  I think I will continue to use my GPS until asked to turn it off.

GPSr Units / Using GPS on Commercial Airlines
March 01, 2010, 02:45:05 PM
Last week as I flew from Miami to Portland, Oregon I was surprised when the American Airlines stewardess told me that I was not allowed to use my GPS while the plane was in the air.  I was trying to determine where we were, how fast we were flying and our altitude.  I chose not to debate the issue with the stewardess and put my GPS away.  Has anyone else on this site experienced similar warnings?

Maps4gps,
Wow, do I feel like an idiot.  The files were there all along I just did not look in the right place!  I needed to look at "The mapset should appear in the narrow box in the upper left."  Everything is fine now.  Thanks for all the support.

Thanks for your reply.  The link you suggested is the same one that I used.  The files that were installed from that link were: 40641798.img, mti_vi.img and mti_vi.TDB.  When I try to use MapSource to open those files I get the message, "XXX is not a valid MapSource file and could not be opened."  If I cannot open the files in MapSource, I am unsure how I can load them into my 60CSX.

Boyd,
Thanks for the info on RAR files.  The link you provided was very informative.

In a few weeks I am traveling to the Virgin Islands.  I downloaded the appropriate maps and placed them into my Garmin Folder.  Then I used MapSource to open the file named "US TerritoriesProtectorates.rar."  When I tried to open the file in MapSource I get the message "XXX.RAR is not a valid MapSource file and could not be opened."  Once I get it opened, I want to download it to my 60CSX.  That part I know how to do.  It appears that I need to convert the file to a different extension.  Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks,

GPSr Units / Re: Help selecting a GPS unit
January 06, 2010, 10:05:45 AM
I use the 60 CSX and love it!  It is rugged and stands up to a lot of hard use.  I use the 60 CSX for river rafting, long distance hiking and sea kayaking.
The batteries (2 double AA's) easily last me for an entire 6 day rafting trip or a 5 day hike in the Cascades.  Recently, while on the summit of a local mountain, I did a direct side-by-side comparison of the 60CSX with a new Oregon.  The display on the 60 CSX was superior to the Oregon's display in bright light.  Personally, I would love to have both GPS units, but I had to choose one.  I chose the 60 CSX and am pleased with my decision.

General Discussion / Re: Do I need Garmin Topo 24k?
December 23, 2009, 12:48:52 PM
I have a 60 CSX and like it a lot.  I also have the 24K chip for my area (Washington/Oregon) and the Garmin TOPO U.S. (100K mapping disk).  Between the two, I prefer to use the Garmin TOPO 100K .  If I really need detailed topo maps of Washington or Oregon, I will use the 24K chip.  But, it seems to have fewer POIs and is not as "user friendly."  The other advantage of the 100K package is that it covers the entire US at a very reasonable price.

Over the years, I have used several different GPS units on my sailboat that I use in the Pacific NW and Canada.  I have had really good luck with the Garmin 192 C.  It is a recently discontinued model, so it should not be very expensive.  You can find it on E-Bay.  You can buy preprogrammed chips for it or you can buy "blank chips" and program them yourself on a computer.  It is small enough to take on a plane with you.  It requires an external antenna which is inexpensive and easy to mount.  The color screen is very bright and useful in sunny conditions.

GPSr Units / Altitude question using 60 CSX
October 17, 2009, 01:53:34 PM
On a recent plane ride I noticed that my 60 CSX was giving me the "altitude" inside the pressurized cabin of the airplane (about 5000 feet) when we were actually at 35000 feet.  I want to reprogram the 60 CSX so it measures altitude (above 15000 feet) using the GPS and below 15000 feet using the barometer.  How do I do that?
Thanks in advance

Using The Maps/Garmin Software / Re: Using City Select V6
September 02, 2009, 11:23:46 AM
I just got off the phone with Garmin.  They were very helpful and...you guys were absolutely right!  They said I could associate my older version of City Navigator with two units.  They gave me another unlock code and I am happily navigating away!  Thanks again for your help.  Byron :)

Dan,
Thanks to you for the very valuable advice.  I will call Garmin this weekend and work out the details.  I'll let you know how it turns out.
