General Discussion / Re: Track Point Count
April 17, 2011, 06:19:41 AM
maps4gps,
Thanks for the reply. I have started to look at and experiment with the settings on my 60CSx. Yesterday I tried two different settings on a 75 mile car ride I needed to take. On the way out I set the options at "Record Method = Auto / Interval = Most Often" and on the way home I used "Record Method = Auto / Interval = Normal". On both settings the the Points collected was 500.

Could this "500" number the max the unit will collect because of where the data was saved, the internal memory? If I had set the option to save the track to the data card would it have saved a higher number of points?

Thanks for your help,
Rob

PS I'm headed off to test a track using the "save track to data card option".

General Discussion / Track Point Count

I'm looking at two different tracks of a similar Hike route (same trails) on wikiloc.com. One is mine and the other by a different member. They both cover approximately 10.5 miles. Mine has 170 track points and the other has 2,282. Not even close.

Questions:
Is the a setting on the GPS that sets the number of collected points?

Is there a benefit to the greater number of points?

General Discussion / Download Track

Can I download a track from wikiloc and:

1) see it on my computer on a map i've downloaded from GPSFileDepot?

2) see it on that same map that I've installed on my GPS?

Thanks,
Rob

Just purchased a couple 4GB micro sd cards for my new gps. The site said micro sdhc 4gb, hope these are the ones I need not just the sd style, thought the hc, was high capacity. Let me know if not right ones please, someone. Thanks , Mike

I spoke with Garmin Tech Support today and he said the unit would accept a 4 GB card, but not the HC version.
Did the 4 GB SDHC work for you?

GPSr Units / 60CSx - Track Log Questions
March 29, 2011, 05:53:37 PM
I think I'm close but would like to confirm and I have questions (if this is too many questions I'll understand).

To set up tracking I do the following:

Main menu, choose Tracks.

In the track log window:
Select ON or OFF
Q: Is this how I START and STOP tracking?

Choose SETUP..
Check "WRAP WHEN FULL"
Q: this is so if the internal memory fills it will start to over write the oldest track? If I don't check "Wrap" what happens when the memory full? The unit stops tracking?

Then choose Method, Interval, Color & Data Card Setup
Q: What exactly am I setting up on the Data Card? To duplicate the track that's on the internal memory?

At this point the unit is ready to start tracking (right?). I hit MENU twice then page to the TRIP COMPUTER page. I can now hit menu, choose RESET, choose what I want to reset. Now all fields are set to zero and the STOPPED time starts to count.

When I choose to end TRACKING I go back to MAIN MENU select TRACKS and SAVE.

Q: After I've saved the TRACK, and go to the TRIP COMPUTER page all the fields (Moving Time, Stopped Time) are still active. Should I be turning Tracking off or something?

Thanks for you time,
Rob

Strap yourself in and please remain seated during the entire ride cause you're about to have the most thrilling time of your life with that 60csx!  :)

Thanks MichaelJ!

I'm really looking forward to reaching that first summit and pressing the "mark" button!

I just hope I remember to look up form the GPS to enjoy the "views from the top" ;)

This one will work for you:
http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/157/

Just make sure you get the Mac edition.

... you will need a microSD card installed to hold maps.

Thanks Indrid Cold,
I'll check out that map, and the unit came with a 1G card.

Am I able to open (see) that map on the computer or is that only to install on the GPS?

Thanks for the reply,
Rob

General Discussion / Slow learner questions
March 25, 2011, 06:38:07 PM
Hi Folks,
I hope you all can tolerate another round of newbie questions. I'm very new to all this.

Just purchased a Garmin 60 csx and I'm taking it step by step. I'm going through the Owner's Manual. So far I been able to mark, name and delete waypoints. I've  also used the track log feature. I have much to learn with the unit it's self as I make my way through the manual.

I'm a bit confused on the computer side of this. I'm using an iMac. I downloaded Base Camp and the New Hampshire TOPO map on this site.

Question: Am I able to open and use the downloaded map (NH TOPO) on the computer? If yes how do I do it?

Thanks in advance,
Rob
