GPSr Units / Re: Garmin eTrek Vista Hcx
April 30, 2010, 07:57:55 PM
I use the Vista HCx and am very happy with this unit.  I use Lithium batteries and get about 28 hours out of the unit.  I have Windows XP running in VirtualBox on Kubuntu.  No problems loading the Garmin as a USB device or selecting the USB storage mode from the Garmin menu.  I also like the feature to disable the GPS.  This saves on batteries when you just want to transfer data between the Garmin and your PC.  Linux does have QLandkarte GT which works with this unit.  As far as satellite reception goes -- this unit is the best.  My father had a Magellan and it was very poor at receiving satellites.  Indoors this unit can pick up satellites.  So, I believe that you would do fine in a canyon, such as the Royal Gorge or the Black Canyon of Colorado.  Depending on location in the house it may take from 1 minute to 5 minutes (1 minute - close to window; 5 minutes - in a basement).  I would recommend this unit to anyone.
