I am thinking about getting the either the etrex 30 or the oregon 450.  I might use it for mountain biking, but mainly for hiking (so I can find my way home) and geocaching with the family.  I have read quite a bit about them. so what are the problems or issues users are having with these units?

I'm new so don't stone me.  I am thinking about getting an eTrex 30 or an Oregon 450.  What's the reasoning behind getting custom maps?  To save the $50 from buying from Garmin?  And don't custom maps slow down the gps unit and have other limitations?
Are custom maps superior to Garmins?
