Title: Loading and viewing POI's on Garmin Nuvi 500.
Post by: BigJay on November 09, 2009, 07:54:26 PM
Hello,

New member to the site.  I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 500 and I am determined to use this device for snowmobiling this winter.  I have done a lot of experimentation with the free snowmobile maps available from gpssleds.com.  I also purchased the Wisconsin maps from the site.  However, I am disappointed that there are no POI's available when using the snowmobile trail software.  I have been told by the software developer that POI's are in the works, but I do not want to wait.

If I turn on the City Navigator maps that came with the unit I have POI's but since the Garmin maps are top priority, the snowmobile trails are no longer visible.  Is there any way for me to load a mapset of POI's only?  I can turn mapsets on or off within the unit, but I have not yet found a way to view both the snowmobile maps and see the closest gas stations and hotels by searching for local points of interest.  Any help or recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bigjay

The website info indicates the trails mapset is transparent.  That mapset should work with CN.

The maps are only visible from 20 miles up or greater.   If you zoom in any closer they disappear.  I asked for help from Garmin tech support and they confirmed I cannot view any POI's unless I have the City Navigator mapset turned on.
