Title: little georgia topo experience
Post by: jds912 on October 26, 2009, 03:13:24 PM
i downloaded the Ga. topo to my vista this weekend. went hunting on sunday and tried out the handheld w/ the topo map. the area i hunted, which is pretty remote, was very accurately detailed. beyond my expectations. now i have to get confident with my unit in the thick woods, in the dark. i need to activate the compass. how thick of cover can you actually be in and still receive a good signal with a vista hcx? thanks 8)

I have never seen any info on that, but it is one of the best GPSrs for such conditions.
It is effected by the water content in the vegetation (leaves).

I use mine in cover and it's always worked fine.

If I am bushwacking or in otherwise uncharted territory I make sure the track log is on and watch the map page. I make occasional waypoints, and make sure my car or something near it is waypointed. I also carry spare batteries. If it's dark I set the backlight on constantly on and don't make it any brighter than it needs to be.
