Title: Map files as burn only type
Post by: liptackj on June 29, 2016, 12:37:05 PM
I just downloaded the current version of "My Trails-High Quality Trail and POI Maps" and when I go to open the map i want, it will not open, but wants to know which drive I want to burn it onto a CD. What did I do wrong?
Thank you
Jim

You don't "open" maps, they must be installed into Garmin's Basecamp program. When you run Basecamp, you will choose the desired map from the dropdown menu. Read this tutorial:

https://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-garmin-basecamp/

The message about burning to CD is bogus. Garmin map files use the .img extension. These are maps in their proprietary format. Unfortunately, the .img file extension is also used for "disk images" but these are completely different. This is confusing your computer. ;)

You should not mess with these .img files at all, they are used by the Basecamp program and not intended to be ""opened".

Interesting. I was following the directions in the 'Read me' file, which says:

"Then go to C:\Garmin\My Trails\ and open one of the *.img files"

Thank you or the reply.
