Most the internet is just heading to https because entities like Google and Mozilla are pushing for it. On this site the only benefit gained is that the communication between you and the server when login is secured. This means someone couldn't intercept your username here and attempt to use it somewhere else (which would already be really difficult because the password isn't what you type when it gets transmitted).

Additionally, I didn't want this to start happening for Chrome users: http://www.zdnet.com/article/google-chrome-gets-ready-to-mark-all-http-sites-as-bad/
