Title: Load the maps in Google Earth?
Post by: SMW on June 21, 2015, 08:27:29 AM
How can I load the map data in Google Earth?

I have the downloading the maps to the computer then viewing them in basecamp were tired of looking at the cartoon maps and want to look at where were going to go using Google Earth.

We tried searching this site their is a overwhelming amount of information on this site but am not sure what we should be searching for hopefully someone more familiar with this site and working with the maps can point us in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

Most of the maps on this site are created in Garmin's proprietary file format. Google Earth cannot open this type of file. However, I don't understand why you would want to open these maps in Google Earth because you don't like them.  ???

The map "is what it is", and opening it in another program will not change that. If you prefer Google Earth, then just use Google Earth.

However, there are some maps on this site that are compatible with Google Earth. They are called "Garmin Custom Maps" and are created in Google's .kmz format. You should be able to open these files in Google Earth. To find this kind of map, go here: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/ and use the "search by map features" option as shown (click on the attachment below to make it large enough to read).

GPSMapedit will export Garmin maps directly into Google Earth format.
