Title: somewhat newbie to the garmin dakota 20

I have the Garmin Dakota 20, with base map which is ok, but I want 24 k maps,  is this the place to get em for free? seriously?

Yup.  24k, mostly non-routable.  Be sure to read the tutorials.

well, can't open the Oklahoma topi map i downloaded to my mac. dog gone it!

It will only give you straight line distances between points. It won't calculate routes on roads or trails from one point to another.  City Navigator (a Garmin Product) is routable and you can use it for driving directions cross country.

Download and install BaseCamp for Macintosh, then double cluck the gmapi file.
