Title: Basecamp and Boyds Map of New Jersey 2012 Map
Post by: emplusten on April 08, 2013, 05:28:24 PM
I am running on a Mac, OSX 10.8.3
I am running Basecamp Version 4.1.1.0 (4.1.1.0)
I am have NY TOPO and PA TOPO and Boyds Map of New Jersey 2012 Map installed.
The NY and PA Maps seem to work fine.

However on the Boyd's NJ map, Basecamp behaves strangely.  I have the "detail" slider at the bottom selected to the left most position (least level of detail/most 'minus sign').  When in this situation, when fully zoomed out, I get nothing displayed.  When I zoom in to 1.5 miles, I get nothing displayed, but zooming in to 1.0 miles and less I get a detailed map.

If I change the level of detail map to "one click above the least level of detail", I see a map from 2.0 miles and below, but not at 3.0 miles and above.

I get maps with other permutations as well.

BTW, I was able to load the NJ map to the Garmin and everything looked fine so it seems to be base camp.

Any ideas?
Thx Emp...

Hi Emp,

Yes, this is also what I am seeing (my Mac Basecamp is old, version 3.3.2, but it seems to work the same). My map was intended to be used with detail set to at least the middle position ("medium" on the Windows version). When set like this, all the minor features will disappear when you zoom out to .7 miles and the whole map will disappear after 5 miles. Try increasing the detail some more and you will find the "sweet spot".

When you zoom out further than 3 miles, it's going to look like a mess no matter what you do. It just was not built in such a way as to work well when zoomed out farther than that; the roads get too fat in relation to the other features. For my own personal use, I never zoom out farther than 1.2 miles with this map. That is just getting beyond the optimal scale to view this amount of detail.

On the GPS, try setting map detail to either "more" or "normal". This will make the minor features disappear at either .8 or 1.2 miles, giving a cleaner view of the map as you zoom out.

Keep in mind that this map has an extreme level of detail due to the landcover and high resolution contours, maybe 10x greater than a Garmin map. This makes it behave a little differently. I think Garmin's older windows software "Mapsource" handles it a little better for some reason.

Hi Boyd,
Thanks!  It's good to know that it is the way it is, rather than something wrong with my settings.  I agree there is a lot of detail on the maps, and once you get zoomed out too far, it gets very busy.  But zoomed in it is great!  I think it is a great mapset and works very well.  You did a great job.  Thanks.

Thanks, glad you like it. Basecamp and the actual GPS devices have always displayed maps differently and that's something that often frustrates those of us who make maps. I am working on an updated version of this map that will have a number of upgrades. But don't hold your breath because I've just started and it's a big project.  ;) It could be a number of months before it's done.

You might also be interested in an alpha version of a website I've created using Google's API, with high resolution LIDAR data. The LIDAR is almost like x-ray vision that sees through the vegetation to reveal the ground itself. The map only covers the Southern half of NJ at this point: http://boydsmaps.com

There's also a very long thread here which is sort of a blog about my maps, starting with the first version 5 years ago: http://forums.njpinebarrens.com/threads/boyds-map-of-the-pines-beta-available.5103/
