Title: Garmin Custom Map, Oregon and Colorado
Post by: Yenalom on April 06, 2012, 01:20:52 PM
I have a friend who has a Garmin Colorado. Someone gave him a kmz file I had created and told him to copy it to the Garmin Custom Map folder on the microsd card.

My friend did this and was amazed that the custom map did not show up on his GPS!

After several conversations with Garmin and me, finally sent the file to Garmin. He was told that there was no problem with the file. However, you cannot load the file to the microSD card by writing it there. The only way to do it was to use BASECAMP to load it to the unit.

My friend followed GARMIN's instructions and the Custom Map is now working on his GPS.

The Garmin employee admitted that with an Etrex you could write it. I know from experience that you can write the file to a Dakota and to a 62st.

I do not understand the difference between these other units and the Oregon,Colorado units. Why does the technique work on them and not the others?

Does what I am saying make any sense to any of you? or is it possible my friend is somehow confused with both sides of the instructions (mine and Garmin's)?

All the .kmz files (which is not many) I placed on my OR300 by a DOS copy from the computer to the SD card or to the OR300's internal memory.

If it's spelled the way you did in your quote that's the problem.  The folder is \Garmin\CustomMaps (one word).  Don't own a Colorado, but that's the folder all my CustomMaps (rasters) are in.  \Garmin\CustomMaps can be on internal memory or a microSD card.

I think somebody is confused. You can just create the CustomMaps folder and copy .kmz files to it. If they meet Garmin's specs they should work. I have posted 17 custom maps here: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/byuser/282/

I never used Basecamp to install any of these, and there have been over 6,000 downloads with no reports of problems.

Thanks for the replies.

I agree with you: "Someone is confused". I am sending these comments to my friend.
