Title: How to chang img file name
Post by: marsingbob on November 09, 2011, 12:10:59 PM
I am having the often reported problem of trying to load two maps on a Garmin.  (Ortopo and TopoIdaho both from this site).  When I load one, I appear to overwrite the other.  I am dealing with an Astro 320 which is a new unit released this summer, so I believe it probably has the most current software.  I am using Basecamp on a 32bit PC.  I have reviewed the forum discussions and I would like to deal with the problem so I can use either map on the GPS without opening both.
As I understand it, I need to change the file name on at least one map from gmapsup.img to something else (such as oretopo.img.  I believe it is the file name on the 320, and not the name of the file on my computer that I need to change(?)  How do I find the file name on the gps unit?  Look somewhere using Basecamp while the unit is connected to the PC?  I have tried the various possiblities I can see and cannot seem to get to it.  (If it is the name of the file stored in my computer how do I find it there?)  The install wizard does not seem to give me a choice to change the name before I install a map and I cannot find the img file name on the GPS unit or a way to change it if I did.

When your unit is connected, it should appear as a USB disk on your desktop. Open it up and look in the \Garmin folder. This is where all maps must be stored. Then, as you say, just change the name of gmapsupp.img to something else.

Do you have a memory card on the Astro?  Personally I feel much safer sending maps to a memory card unless you've backed up all the Astro files on a PC.

Thanks to both of you.  Both maps on the gps and working.  As soon as Boyd said usb, I recognized where to go.  One of the problems of having been here almost 50 years before computers came along is that the simple things cause the most difficulty!  Seldom, I had already started when I got your response, but I came through ok this time.

Be sure to back up you Astro files to a PC, even if you are sending maps to a card.  Just drag and drop everything on the Astro to a folder on the PC.
