Title: multiple maps on Oregon 450
Post by: texastomek on September 21, 2011, 02:38:11 PM
For some reason, I cannot get more than 2 maps on my 450 using Mapsource or Basecamp. I have an 8GB SD card in there. I'm trying to install the Georgia, North Carolina, and My Trails maps but every time I install one, it deletes another. I cannot get all three on my 450 at the same time. What am I doing wrong???

That's the way it works. Each time a map is sent, it creates a file named gmapsupp.img in the Garmin folder on the GPS, deleting any previous gmapsupp.img. The fix is simple; after sending the first map, change the file name to something else, such as georgia.img. Now send the next map and rename gmapsupp.img to carolina.img (or whatever). Repeat as needed.

well to revive this thread somewhat, does renaming the maps allow them to then overlay one another?  Or do I have to open each map one at a time for whatever situation I'm in?
I should get my 450 tomorrow and I'm eagerly planning ahead  ;D

On the Oregon when you go to the Map setup screen you can enable/disable any maps that are installed. So you can have more than one enabled, but the results will be completely dependent on the specific maps you use.

Each map has a draw priority from 0 to 31 associated with it that is chosen by the author. Maps with high draw priorities are drawn after low priorities. Whatever is drawn last will cover up the ones that are drawn first. The name of the map file has no bearing on this.

So unless a map is specifically designed to have transparent areas that allow the maps underneath to show through, it will simply hide any other map with a lower draw priority. Transparent maps are usually created with a priority of 31 so they will draw on top of any other maps you have enabled. Garmin City Navigator has a priority of 30 and will cover and hide most other maps.

On the GPSr, depends on which maps you will be using - mapsets differ, you need to be specific.

Neither MapSource nor BaseCamp will display more than one mapset at the same time.

Renaming maps permits you to have more than one mapset on your GPSr.  If you have two maps of the same area.  For example a road map and a transparent topo map, the topo and the road map will both be visible on the GPSr as Boyd says, but only one map at a time will be visible in MapSource or BaseCamp, as maps4gps says.
