Title: GPSFileDepot: New Design/upgrades
Post by: -Oz- on September 18, 2011, 12:24:05 PM
All,

As you can see the new version of GPSFileDepot has gone live.  Although I attempted to do extensive bug testing there are likely a few issues floating around.  This is the thread to post any problems you run into.  The new design also moves the code and features into modern times and includes some upgrades to help users get help and get content with ease.

When posting a "look" problem please include what browser and version you are using.

The forums are scheduled for an upgrade as well both in terms of functionality and moving to the new design.

Wow, you've been busy. Nice job, looking good in Firefox on Windows!  :D

Can't find a link to maps.  Also, what's with the karma?  Mine's pretty bad already.
Got to the maps by typing in the URL.  Page looks nice, but links to individual maps on Custom Maps page for AZ don't work.
My browser is Firefox 6.0.2 (Win7-64).  Firewall is BitDefender.

Crap, updating the forums change the column names... I'll work on the fix right now.

Your Karma is currently +1; I figured it was like giving thanks; maybe it isn't such a good idea.

Alright, that bug is fixed.  Let me know if you see any others.

Map links are working now, but I'd still like to see a link from the forums to the maps.  My primary bookmark is to the forums, without a link to the maps, I'll need two bookmarks.

I'm working on it; I hope to have the modified forums theme up in the next couple hours.

The new forums theme is up.  Now you can get everywhere else on the site from the forums and vice-versa.

By any chance has the problem with uploading big maps locking up been fixed?

How big is big?  I uploaded .5 gig on July 29 w/ no problems.

On the page(s) listing the mapsets available for individual States, the first two+- letters of the column heardings are truncated.

@maps4gps: What browser?  I assume by headings you mean the "Topo", "Roads", etc?

I can't replicate the problem in Chrome or IE9

IE9
version 9.0.8112.16421
update versions 9.0.2

That is some strange version number.

We have the same version...

This is how it looks to me.

Do you have compatibility mode on (i put a box around the compatibility mode button).

OZ,  The new look for GPSFileDepot looks very good and professional, nice upgrade. Thanks for all of the time and effort you put into the site.

I have noticed that when I view an individual's map, in the "Map Information" box there is no name listed beside the "Created By" telling you who made the map.  I have viewed several maps and all maps I have looked at no longer list the map creators name.

On a similiar but seperate issue; on the "Garmin Compatible Custom Maps" page, in the "New User Start Here" box if you select to search for maps using "maps by creator" then you get a tally of all the maps by an individual but without any Creator's names.

Again, nice job on the new look.

@eaparks: Those errors have been fixed; part of the major forum upgrade.  Thanks for the compliments and finding the errors.

Glad its working for you map4gps; I'll try to add some conditional css to work with IE 7 (that is what compatibility mode drops you down to).

I see a minor bug on the map page where additional maps by the same author are listed. For example: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/28

Notice that it says "Other Maps By (See All)". Really, it should say "Other Maps By Oz (See All)." This problem seems to exist on all the map pages I've seen, regardless of author.

ALSO:

If you navigate to Maps:All (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/state/all) and scroll down to "Chattnooga, TN Bike Trails - Raccoon Mtn., Booker T. Washington St. Park, Enterprise S. Nature Park, TN River Walk" you can see where the check boxes are all out of line for this map and the one after it due to the long name.

This is repeated several times for all maps with long title names.

I don't see that issue on Firefox 3 under Vista. There are several map names too long to fit in the column, but they wrap around to a second line and do not affect the alignment of the checkboxes.

My images where cropped, and my smallest monitor is 1680 wide. These images are all taken in full screen mode.

I even updated to Firefox 7 just a couple hours ago and they still show the same.

Makes no difference in either full screen or windowed mode for me, since the active part of the GPSFileDepot window is a fixed width.

Just installed Firefox 7.  No difference from Firefox 6.  My monitor's 1080x1920. Nvidia video card.   Screen windowed or full screen.   My Chattanooga bike trails look like babj615's.

I am also seeing the long Map titles not wrapping correctly; using XP, IE9, 22" monitor.  If I activate "Compatibility View" then the extended line with the long title wraps correctly but also all unaffected rows (short titles) are doubled in height too, and then I'm not able to read all of the text in the column headings, due to some of the text being cut off.

Fixed

The other problem is a problem (I'm sure sure how FF 3.0 is displaying it correctly).  I'll have to play around to make it work.

On the map page for at least My Trails there are two boxes at the top.  The one on the left goes down further than the one on the right.  The text begings to display under the right box instead of starting to display under the lower left box.  I tried adding a couple of CR but the text still starts in the wrong place.  Thanks

Fixed this error. I went back and removed the extra lines so it looks good.

Fixed the overlap problem on the map list pages.  I had it just "lop" off the rest of the map name though so hopefully that isn't too much of an issue until I can figure something else out.
Title: Re: GPSFileDepot: New Design/upgrades
Post by: jbensman on October 03, 2011, 08:13:20 AM
Thanks for fixing the overlap problem!

The problem with uploading big files is still there.  It took me 2 tries to upload the new Windows version of My Topos (little over 1 gig).  I am on my 3rd attempt to upload the Mac installer.  The first time the Windows uploader stopped uploading was after a couple of hours of it uploading.  The first MAC stalled right away and the second attempt stalled after about 3 hours. I have it uploading again and hope it works this time.

Maybe it has something to do with how slow uploads are (why are they so slow?)  Normally what happens after 2 or 3 hours, is it just stops and it shows 0 kbs.  I did not have any problems when I uploaded a new version of My POIs and My Trails.
Title: Re: GPSFileDepot: New Design/upgrades
Post by: maps4gps on October 03, 2011, 08:38:35 AM
The slower upload speed may be due to a limitation of the service provider.  Mine limits the upload speed to about 30% of the download - about 10Mb/minute download, 3Mb/minute for upload.  I have heard that if a faster service was available for my area,  the upload speed might still be limited to 3Mb/minute.

My (wireless) service just got upgraded to 4MB down, 1MB up.  After that I noticed that my uploads to GPSfiledepot became more reliable.  Of course my biggest upload was only .5 gig.

I've got high speed charter internet.  I know I can upload much faster than this site allows me.

One more thing I forgot to point out, the java applet is normally locked up after it stops uploading.  I usually have to go back to the place where I select upload new version.  This would not be as bads if there was a way to resume the upload after it stops uploading.
Title: Re: GPSFileDepot: New Design/upgrades
Post by: Seldom on October 03, 2011, 12:59:17 PM
What browser are you using?  I'm using Firefox and current Java, and have been able to resume uploads w/ no problem.
Title: Re: GPSFileDepot: New Design/upgrades
Post by: jbensman on October 03, 2011, 02:51:30 PM
I am using IE9.  Could that be causing the problem?

What steps do you follow to get it to resume uploading after it stops?

It locked up on 89% so I am on my 4th attmpt to upload it.
Title: Re: GPSFileDepot: New Design/upgrades
Post by: Seldom on October 03, 2011, 05:14:31 PM
I haven't done this since June, or July, but I seem to recall a "resume" button of some sort.
Title: Re: GPSFileDepot: New Design/upgrades
Post by: jbensman on October 03, 2011, 06:34:50 PM
Well after about 5 hours it stopped again.  I could not get screen capture to work, so I took a picture of my screen and have attached it.  If I click on the add button, it brings up a file directory.  If I click on jump loader I get a warning from Norton and if I select allow nothing happens.  Nothing else is responsive.  I am getting really frustrated with this and am about to give up trying to provide a MAC version.  I am going to not close the window and open a new window and upload the MAC version of My POIs and My Trails.  Maybe someone can tell me how I can upload the MAC installer for My Topos

Afraid we'll need to leave this one for Oz.  IIRC when my upload stopped the "Retry Failed" button activated to resume upload.

This afternoon after work I will take a look.  The most reliable way to upload is to let the java program upload via FTP but due to all the recent Java security issues they broke that functionality in the newest updates.

I've post an updated uploader.  let me know if it works (sorry I can't do better than trial and error).  I've tested an upload on my end and it works.

The speeds slow down (sadly) once the upload has gone over a certain threshold.  That is because this site doesn't get enough donations to support a dedicated server with enough bandwidth.

Thanks!  I am starting the upload now.  I can tell you this, with the old one  it was uploading at 89 kbs.  This one is uploading at 130 kbs.  So I like it much better already!

While I don't do this for the money, when you consider how much these maps would cost commerically it suprises me how few donations there are.  I bet I get less than a penny per hour of work in donations.  So it does not suprise me that there are so few donations for the site.  But it disappoints me that people don't give more donations.

What would happen if the site gave away maps, but charged a membership fee to access them?  Or would that get too complicated?
