Title: Problem with montana file - can't open MapSource
Post by: hntr on February 27, 2009, 12:01:00 PM
Hi,

I tried to load this file to MapSource:  http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/87/ (http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/87/)

I didn't follow the instructions and I just saved it to MyDocuments.  I modfied the system registry as directed, but now it says I need to re-install MapSource to use it.

I uninstalled my TopoUSA 2008 completely and reinstalled with the CD that came with my unit.  I still get the re-install message saying there is a problem with my installation.

how can I fix this?

Be careful when installing maps. Follow all the instructions. I guess at this point  all you want is to get Mapsource working again. To do this, you need to undo the registry changes from the Montana map. You can do this manually by deleting the registry hive:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Garmin\MapSource\Families\MT Landowner Topo"

Alternately, you can install the registry key I am providing here (basically, just save the key to your computer and double click it)  and it will hopefully restore your Mapsource to its previous state.

All I do know is that going into regedit and deleting the two Garmin folders that are located in the software folders for current user and local machine H keys does fix this problem.  Then reloading the CD seems to restore mapsource.

If you delete the Garmin Registry Key Hive (looks like folder), and you have multiple maps installed, you will need to reinstall _all_ of your maps as none of them will function after that.

The Garmin folder contains information about all your maps. It is better to delete only the offending ones, rather than everything.

delete just the MT Landowner one, its a family one.

I'm uploading an installer version right now.  Just over 1 hour left.  same with the mac version

Ok, thanks!  It works again!
