Title: what are the best highway maps for the gpsmap 60csx
Post by: gcfs on February 23, 2011, 10:39:39 AM
I have the garmin gpsmap 60csx and I have all the topos loaded on it that I need, but I would like to load some highway/city maps in it as well.  Is it possible to use it like a nuvi or tom tom?  What maps should I download?

Hey Indrid are you a fan of the Mothman movie or John Keels book by the same title?

Now, on topic, where does one go to get the maps you referenced? Do you have to purchase those from Garmin?

Some of the TOPO's here are routable, and will have to be combined with your other maps before loading them into the 60csx as a single .img file.

Not many of the topos here are routable, and I'd recommend City Navigator NT for driving directions over DIY routable maps.  My routable topos  are more useful for trail navigation to let you know how far you have to go, and when you can expect to arrive.

But, if you are looking for car routing, buy a Nuvi or something that has spoken directions.  The chirps and arrows you'll see on the 60CSX can be a serious distraction when driving a vehicle.

Well, that's the thing. The way pricing has gone, it's just as cheap to buy a low end nuvi as City Navigator. We have seen the Nuvi 205 and 1200 around the $80 mark. You could even pick up somethink like the nuvi 255w or 1300 (widescreen model) for that kind of price if you watch for a sale. That will give you a much bigger, brighter screen and spoken directions, plus the car mount and power cable - an all around better solution for driving.

But if you really want this on your 60csx, you could also consider Garmin's 24k topo maps. They have the same routing capabilities as City Navigator. See the discussion plus screenshots here: http://forums.gpsfiledepot.com/index.php/topic,1844.0.html
