Title: Oregon 450 won't show enabled maps downloaded from Mapsource
Post by: mrcyogi on December 10, 2010, 09:45:08 AM
I am stuck. Can someone give me a heads up. I click on "Maps" and can only get the base map that came with the unit to show. I went to Setup and enabled the map I want (GA topo from GPSFileDepot)....

If you see the map listed on the Setup screen, then it's on your unit. Make sure you are viewing an area that the map covers, and zoom way in (500 ft level perhaps).

Are you sure you sent the whole map to your GPS with mapsource. You might not have chosen enough of it with the selection tool.

Hi Boyd,

Thanks for taking the time to help. I still can't see the downloaded map. Don't know what else to do. I'm choosing the drive for the 8GB card I have installed. I've also tried selecting the "Garmin" unit for the transfer...

Explain the exact steps you took when installing the map. I assume you're talking about this? http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/149/

The author is very active here in the forums, I'm sure he'll drop by with some suggestions if you can't figure it out.

Yes, that's the map (SE US Topo also). Steps: I downloaded the map from this site; installed the "MapSetToolKit" and cgpsmapper.exe to a folder I created in "My Documents";I following the instructions on the "How to Load .img Files Into MapSource With MapSetToolKit" tutorial'; Compiled it and checked box for "Install in MapSource; it completed and I opened MapSource and the map was listed along with "no map" and the "PC Base Map". Then I opened the GA map and selected two locations with the "map tool". Then I selected the two locations that listed in the left-hand window of MapSource and "transfered" them to my device (Oregon 450). The map shows in the device, I enabled it, and nothing shows when I go back to the main menu and click "Map"..... Hope this helps; I feel bad putting everyone out...

Marshall

The maptool will select quads/tiles and list them in the box at the left.  You do not again select them in that box; just have MapSource send them to the device.

When you go to the map page, it will be centered on your current location - if you did not upload quads/tiles for that location, you will not see anything until you pan to the location of the quads/tiles you uploaded - and be zoomed-in, maybe as far as the 500' level, ususally the major features are displayed at the 2-3 mile zoom level.

You might have messed up something using mapsettoolkit & cgpsmapper. Don't both those maps come with an installer so you wouldn't need to go through the tutorial you did...

See, this is what you did wrong. Those maps should be self-installing and you should NOT have needed mapsettoolkit or cgpsmapper. When you run the .exe file that you downloaded, it should install everything into mapsource. Then you just follow the tutorial for loading the maps into your GPS. You do NOT need to mess directly with the .img files. Those are only used by mapsource internally.

I don't know what might have messed up by doing all this, maybe it won't matter. Or you might need to uninstall and start over again.

Okay, I "Where toed" it to a city on the map I'm trying to access and zoomed in=nothing. Based on your other inputs/suggestions, guys, I'll unistall the maps on my computer and re-download them from GSPFiledepot without MapsetToolKit and transfer to the device--and see. I'll report back. Thanks again, all.

It may be a little tricky, since you've installed the same maps two different ways (if I understand). When you ran the installer, it loaded them into mapsource. Then when you "rolled your own", it installed them again, probably with different parameters.

I think you should first use the windows feature to remove programs and see if the topo maps are listed there (they will be if they were installed as intended). Remove the maps this way. Now run mapsettoolkit and see what maps it lists as being installed. Remove those also.

Uninstalling in mapsettoolkit doesn't remove the actual files though, just the registry entries. So there could be some issues.

Mapsource really is a can of worms. It would be nice if they rewrote it like a modern program that just opens map files instead of needing to "install" them.

Hi Boyd,

I uninstalled all downloaded maps on my computer (Control Panel;storage folders); I uninstalled all the maps off of MapSetTool and MapSource. Then I dis a disk clean and a Norton scan and repair and restarted my computer. I downloaded the GA Topo from GPSFileDepot (it doesn't have an installer file like SE US Topo). The map shows in MapSource Utility, "Manage Map Products" but not in the menu tab (no drop down window) at the top left on the main MapSource screen. Any suggestions now?...

Sorry, you have completely lost me. The Georgia topo that you said you were using does have an installer.

QuoteInstallation

for windows, download and run setup. The map will then appear in Garmin MapSource and can be added to your GPS by selecting it in MapSource and sending it to the GPSr.

The xxxx.exe file you downloaded is a self-installing file, simply run/execute it after you have downloaded it.

Hey, again. I looked through the files of GA Topo and no installer or .exe. The download process seemed to go smoothly. (The folder created, previously downloading SE Topo, contained an installer file that I used and then saved the produced files. Maps4gps comment: I think I must have "run/executed" the file during the download process, just responding to pop up screens to authorize phases of the download...But I made some progress: I uninstalled MapSource and reinstalled it from Garmin.com; that brought the GA Topo map on the MapSource screen. I then selected several sections of the map to transfer to my 450 (this is where my original problem began). The map appeared to load to the device (sent it to the 8GB card) visa vi Setup>enabled it and disabled the preloaded basemap. Nothing came up just the blue cone icon, and I could move the blank map; went to "Where to go" and went to Altanta and zoomed the blank map down and nothing...

NEVER diable your basemap.  Everythng will display on top of it and it gives you a base map to find where your map is.  Mark a waypoint in mapsource where part of the map is.  Send the waypoint to your GPS and see if you can find it.

Are you in GA?  If so make sure you downlaod that part of the map.  Then when you get a fix, you will know if you have it loaded right.

If you have a GA Topo folder with the .img files, a .tdb file and an uninstall.exe file then you already ran the .exe self-installing file you dowmloaded.

As JB mentioned; you either need to be physically at the location of the downloaded maps or pan to their location in order to see them on the GPSr (it is NOT like MapSource where the entire mapset will be visible) - you also need to be zoomed in enough (in the range of 800' to 1 mile or so) for the data to be visible on the GPSr.  If zoomed out to far and/or outside the area of what was placed on the GPSr; then the built-in Garmin basemap will display (if it is enabled).

Okay. I got it all to work. Advice: (1) Save map downloads in the suggested folder in the pop up screens during downloading (you can only alter the name of the file that is saving in the pop up going to that location. (2) Download MapSource to your computer before you download GPS maps; they may not show in MapSource unless you do. (3) In MapSource go to "View" and make sure that "no map" is not checked in "Switch Product". (4) If you are sending map segments to your Garmin unit (mine is an Oregon 450), make sure you mark a "waypoint somewhere on those segments; my unit brings up the "base map" when I pull "Maps" up, so the only way to get to a map you want to use that's been transfered from MapSource and enabled on your unit is to go to the device menu and bring up "Waypoints". Then you can select the waypoint associated with the map you want and the device brings up the map.

Thanks for all your tips Heros and Sr. users that responded to my needs.

So far after much experimenting, I've found that waypoints created in MapSource with a "map set" don't transfer to the unit. If I create waypoints with the base map on the unit and then view them in "Whereto" >"Waypoints", the waypoint selected goes to the "right" map not the base map??? Who's to know. I'll keep at it and report anything else of interest.

Waypoints are stored independently from the maps. They will work on any map. However, the Oregon 450 and a couple other of Garmin's newest models store waypoints in a different format. This is not compatible with Mapsource, so I suspect that's what's causing your issues. You will need to use Basecamp to properly manage waypoints on the Oregon 450.

In Garmin's own support forums, the developers said they would love to make Mapsource compatible with these new models, but realistically, they would probably never get around to it.
