Title: GARMIN 78s
Post by: Theregulator on September 24, 2010, 12:08:02 PM
Hello everyone. New to GPS, New to this site. I recently purchased a Garmin 78s, it is my first GPS. I will mainly use it for fishing, but i will also use it for auto. It comes with a base map but does not have any other maps on it. I have been succesful creating some maps with the custom map feature, which is very cool.

I would like to see some of the maps on here on it. It appears the Garmin 78s does not use map source.  When I create a custome map it simply creates a KMZ file and I drag it in the custom maps folder on the unit. Can I still use the maps on here? Any info would be appreciated! :)

Thanks
Mike

Garmin is steering users of their handheld units towards BaseCamp, but Mapsource will still work just fine. Follow the installation instructions that are given for the maps that you download. Most will have installer scripts to put them into Mapsource. If you don't already have mapsource, install it first as per the tutorial: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-install-mapsource-if-it-didnt-come-with-your-gps/

After you have installed Mapsource, run the installer for the map you have downloaded an use this tutorial to transfer the map to your GPS: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-maps-on-my-garmin-gps-unit/

You should also be able to use Basecamp to install if you prefer.

Boyd,
Thanks for your response. I should have stated I did read the thread with the turorial and tried to get mapsource through the tutorial using the same links you provided. When I went to download mapsource  it stated that the version will not work unless you already have a version of mapsource installed.

Maybe I should try basecamp, or is there something else needed?

You need to follow the tutorial EXACTLY. First you must download and install Training Center. You don't need that program, but it will install a basemap on your computer. THEN you install Mapsource. It will see the basemap and will then function properly.

The error message you got means that Mapsource didn't detect any Garmin maps on your computer and therefore will not install. The Training Center install is a hack to get around this problem.

Thanks, I'll give it another go. That makes more sense now. I appreciate your help! Look forward to future discussions! ;)

Thanks again
