Never heard of one that would not work anywhere on the surface of the earth.

Signal reception is best as 'line of sight'.  Metal buildings, cliffs, deep valleys, etc. with block or deflect the signals and result in a less accurate position or sometimes none at all.  The newer models do a somewhat better conpensation for this - some of these have an 'H' in the model number.

If you're looking for something on the less expensive side, look into an eTrex model with a high sensitive receiver such as the Vista HCx.

Chilena,
Let me know when you find some usefull maps for down there.  I am going to Tierra del Fuego
in February and the only topo maps I've found are 1:1,000,000 and expensive!  :-\
