Title: GPS for desert and mountains

this question has probably been asked before but not sure about the relpies so here it is
again. need a garmin for the desert and mountains hiking. one that will not fail and will work in
canyons with trees. going to out of the way places and need something very relaiable.

Garmin products of 60CSX or later vintage (OR's, DK's, CO's, and the new 78s and 62s) should all do pretty well under trees. 

Don't expect quality performance from any GPSr in canyons.  Above is a sample of what my OR300 did in Zion Canyon.  I did a side by side test with a 60CSX and it was no better.
