Title: used unit need help
Post by: di123 on January 30, 2010, 05:59:02 PM
I have a Rino 520hcx unit i bought from a retailer used. When I try to download maps I get a previous map source not found. The micro SD chip was missing. The unit does not have any topo maps on it. I downloaded training center/communicator and map source as suggested. Is there any way to download maps without buying the software from garmin?

Yes, just follow these two tutorials:
Get MapSource: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-install-mapsource-if-it-didnt-come-with-your-gps/
Download any maps you want from this site
Load them to your GPS: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-maps-on-my-garmin-gps-unit/

And you should purchase a microsd card.  They're under $10 on newegg for 4gb.

The order in which you do things is important:

FIRST - download and install Training Center
SECOND - download and install Mapsource
THIRD - download and install the maps from this site.

When you install training center, it places a crude basemap on your computer. When you install mapsource, it will see this map as a Garmin "product" and that will activate it. If you haven't already installed Training Center, Mapsource won't install because it doesn't find any Garmin maps on your computer.
