Title: New here. Have a question
Post by: Stormstaff on November 20, 2009, 01:04:53 AM
Maybe I'm a little paranoid but why are the topo maps .exe files? I just figured it'd be some type of different file. I get scared with .exe's, hehe.

Sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone.

Thanks for your time!

Feel free to scan your downloads with anti-virus software before opening.

To view the maps in MapSource, changes need to be made to your Windows registry that identify where the maps and some other files can be found on your machine.  An .exe Installer file is a convenient way to create those settings.  Installers created with the template from GPSfiledepot also come with an uninstaller.

If you want to see what goes into the installer read "Creating Setup Files" at the following link:

It's a whole lot easier than using REGEDIT.

Ah. So it's an .exe to make it easier on the end user, me?

Very cool! Thanks for the response/info!

Not all of them are .exe files, especially the Macintosh ones. ;)
