I just purchased a nuvi 550. Should topo 24k garmin maps be loaded into a SD card or into the 550?

I doesn't matter. You can load them in internal memory if there's enough free space. Otherwise, use an SD card.

What he said with the caveat of if you want to change areas/or states then put it on the SD card.

It's easier to deal with from the SD card.
