Title: New to the handheld GPS world.
Post by: danbohn on April 14, 2015, 02:15:03 PM
So I wanted to start tracking where I have been when out riding my Atv.. I have never had a handheld GPS... So I did the research and ended up buying a Garmin Montana 600... Being new to all of this.. Where do I start? I live in Wisconsin and the primarily use of this GPS will be for Atv use only... I'm basically looking on how to use track where I have been..save it and bring it back up again to find my way back need be. Any help would be great

Rich did a nice "GPS 101" series of articles at GPSTracklog a few years ago: http://gpstracklog.com/2010/02/handheld-gps-101-waypoints.html

Garmin also has a series of beginner tutorials: http://www8.garmin.com/learningcenter/on-the-trail/oregon/

These are all for the Oregon, but the Montana is similar.

If you want to try some free maps from here, just download whatever looks interesting:

http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/

This tutorial explains how to install and view the maps on your computer:

http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-open-maps-in-garmin-basecamp/

And this one explains how to send maps to your GPS:

http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-load-maps-on-my-garmin-gps-unit/

Now get out and enjoy your Montana! I've had one for about three years and it has been great. It should be compatible with all the maps on this site.
