Title: Oregon 450 External power OK?
Post by: dietersrover on February 27, 2015, 08:22:14 AM
Hello all.
I tried to find an answer to this before I posted the question, I couldn't find anything in the manual. When I plug my 450 into the 12v Auto usb adaptor, I get the mass storage screen. Can the 450 be powered by USB 12v auto adaptor?
Thanks
Dieter

It is probably related to the USB cable. There are two kinds of cables - data and power. The data cables have extra wires and confuse the GPS into thinking it's connected to a computer. So you could try a different cable.

There should also be a setup menu option that affects this. On my Montana I think it's in the System menu under interface. If you choose the Garmin Spanner option, the GPS will ask what you want to do when a cable is connected.

There is certainly no reason why you can't externally power the Oregon.

Yes.  Garmin uses pin 5 (normally not used) on their power cables to let the GPS know it is a power connection and not a computer connection.

You can either but a Garmin power connector or change the settings in the GPS as mentioned above.

thanks.
I did end up purchasing a Garmin USB cable, and that worked great.
