I bumped onto this website and forum when I was googling whether I could download 3rd party maps onto my Garmin device. For example can I download Australia map from, say, GPSfiledepot (or Navfree or Copilot) and transfer it to my Garmin device for use in Australia?
It's like asking can Garmin device takes on a compatible map. Is this what the GPSfiledepot all about - OR is it just about organizing video/pictures from Garmin Device to PC (from what I read about Garmin Basecamp there seems to be a hint of that).
I'm a new dummy. So will someone pls enlighten me. Thank you.
This site is an archive of Garmin-compatible maps. Map formats are proprietary and cannot be used across different platforms, so the maps here will not work with CoPilot, Magellan, TomTom, etc - only Garmin. Most of the maps here are free and have been created and contributed by users. Most of them are not routable - they will not provide you with turn-by-turn directions, they will only show your location of the GPS screen.
If you don't own a Garmin device, the maps here are not going to be useful. If you do own a Garmin device, you can browse the available maps here and download any that interest you:

These tutorials explain how to install the maps on your computer and send them to your GPS:
