Title: Custom Map for eTrex 30
Post by: treknexplore on July 30, 2012, 10:35:48 PM
What's a good resolution for custom maps? I tried 96 dpi but it gets very pixelated on the eTrex when zoomed in.

Loading tiles is slow. Can anything be done to speed that up? Map is a jpeg chopped into tiles by MapC2MapC64

Thanks for the help. Looks a little cleaner at 128 dpi, but still slow to load. I'm not a fan if custom maps. Barely usable IMO.

Others have complained that the eTrex 20 and 30 are sluggish with custom maps. They aren't so bad on the Oregon. On the Montana, they are very responsive. I think it has to do with the graphics capabilities of the chipsets. I've seen it suggested that Garmin may have sacrificed some screen refresh performance in order to support GLONASS, but no idea if that is really true.

FWIW, in the past the forum moderators have not allowed discussion of user-created .jnx files since it requires hacking the device firmware....
