Title: down loading my trails onto my computor.

I tried to download my trails to my computor but when it downloaded I was unable to access it. It shows it as a disc file and I cannot open it. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Yes, you are trying to open the .img file. It is NOT a disk image.

If you have run the I staller that came with the map, you should find the map installed in MapSource and/or BaseCamp. Check out the tutorials on using them.
