Just tried this with my OR300.  My corresponding number reads 5676 feet.  That's pretty close to my altitude (actually 5720 feet).  Are you 32m above sea level?

Yes, it is your elevation, not altitude.

Yes, it is your elevation, not altitude.

What's the difference?

yes, 32 meters more or less.

however, there are instances where the satellite page display altimeter does not jive with the elevation contained in other pages of the oregon 550. will be posting photos to better illustrate the point.

btw, do you have issues with your oregon 300 altimeter (like giving readings that's way off the actual altitude/elevation)?

Yes, it is your elevation, not altitude.

What's the difference?

Altitude is height above ground level.
Elevation is height above sea level.

Altitude is generally used while in the air, while elevation is used by those on the ground.

Webster' New Dictionary of Synonyms:

"While ALTITUDE and ELEVATION are often interchangeable, Altitude may be
preferred in referring to vertical distance ABOVE the surface of the earth
... *** <an airplane flying at an altitude of 12,000 feet><the altitude of
a cloud> Elevation is used especially in reference to vertical height
above sea level ON the surface of the earth; thus one would speak of the
altitude of a balloon; a village situated at an elevation, preferable to
altitude, of 2000 feet ... "

They all do this.

Did you check your GPS Accuracy also?

The GPSr will not display your elevation here until it has a lock on your position, and as that lock becomes more accurate, the elevation will also.

The GPSr is comparing your position to map elevation data.

I regularly get the discrepancy shown above, on my OR, Etrex, and 62s.   USGS 10M DEMs show my elevation at 5714 (not quite as mentioned above)  GPS elevations this morning show 60CSX--5709, OR300--5680, Etrex 30--5682, 62s -- 5362 (300 feet below the others).  All were set to Auto Calibration.

Just turned the 62 back on after I had manually calibrated the altimeter. Now it reads 5693.
